The price of both diesel and unleaded remains at its lowest for years

The price of both diesel and unleaded remains at its lowest for years - with Coventry's cheapest petrol station 16p cheaper per litre than the most expensive.

Across the city's 31 petrol stations, the average price per litre of unleaded petrol was 102.5p on February 17.

Motorists filling up a 70-litre tank at the city's cheapest filling stations could save around £11.20, compared to the most expensive petrol station.

However petrol in Coventry was found to be 0.6 pence per litre more expensive than the national average which stood at 101.9p per litre on February 17.

Due to the current price of oil, petrol prices at the start of 2016 are significantly cheaper than they were at the start of 2015 with the average litre of unleaded petrol costing 5.2 per cent less this year compared to last year.

Diesel is quite a bit dearer at the local BP station.

Petrol price rises 3p a litre as costs rise for motorists

After eight months of falling pump costs, data has revealed a sudden and unwelcome price rise for motorists in Coventry and Warwickshire.

RAC Fuel Watch data taken throughout March shows that the average price of petrol increased by 3p a litre - with experts warning drivers of further increases in the coming weeks.

Traditionally the lowest in the country, supermarket prices rose from an average of 99.88p a litre at the start of the third month of 2016.

By the end of March, however, motorists were forced to shell out 102.19p per litre for their fuel - a rise of more than 2p.

Worryingly, the wholesale price of petrol increased by 6p a litre, from 97.13p to 103.19p, suggesting that the pump price is likely to go up again in the coming weeks.

Diesel forecourt prices also increased by 3.7p a litre – from 101.56p to 105.26p –with supermarkets seeing a rise of 3.5p a litre.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams says: "The good times for motorists enjoying lower fuel prices had to come to an end at some point.

"Unfortunately, it’s happened with a bit more of a bump than motorists were probably expecting."

The price of a barrel of oil went up significantly in March, going over the $40-mark for four days in the middle of the month before dropping back to $38 by month end.

It's funny how they're very slow to reduce prices when oil falls but incredibly quick to put them up again when oil rises? :fuming:

Cost of fuel in Coventry rises for the second month in a row

Coventry motorists can expect to shell out more at the pump as petrol prices rise for a second month in a row.

Data released by RAC Fuel Watch has shown that since March the cost of petrol has soared back to around £1.08 per litre.

According to the motoring giant the increase was caused by a 25 per cent increase in the cost of oil.

Late last year consumers enjoyed the start of eight months of cheap fuel as the average litre of petrol cost less than £1.

However the cost of a litre of petrol is still 7p cheaper than it was in May 2015. Diesel also costs 8p less than it did last May.

The organisation added that because of the continued over-production of oil the prices may soon stabilise and drop again.

Simon Williams, the RAC’s fuel spokesman, says: “The physical or spot price of Brent crude oil saw its largest one-month gain in price in the past 12 months.

“While this has had an adverse impact on the price motorists are paying for petrol and diesel on the forecourt, the world is still producing too much oil which means prices should not rise much further, and may stabilise or even start to fall again.

“It’s worth remembering that while prices have gone up in both March and April motorists are still paying 7p per litre less for petrol and 11p per litre less for diesel than they were at this time a year ago which means a tank of unleaded is more than £3 cheaper and diesel is £6 less expensive.”

Supermarkets cut petrol and diesel prices across UK from TONIGHT

Image

Price war at the pumps comes just in time for family trips over school holidays

Supermarkets are slashing the prices of petrol and diesel from TONIGHT after Morrisons sparked a war at the pumps.

Tesco has launched a 2p drop in fuel prices that came into effect at 5pm tonight at its 500 stations.

Asda has announced a national cap that means motorists won’t pay more than 105.7 pence per litre on unleaded petrol and no more than 106.7 pence per litre on diesel at its 272 stations. Those prices also start today.

Andy Peake, Asda’s senior petrol director, said: "At Asda we always pass on any savings we can make to our customers, so it’s great to see that costs have dropped despite early predictions that the cost of fuel would increase following the outcome of the EU Referendum."

Mr Peake said the price cut had come because it was the school holidays and families would be going out more as they made the most of the summer break.

But oil prices recently dropped to around 43 US dollars a barrel, the lowest level since early May.

Asda and Tesco will tomorrow be joined by Sainsbury’s which announced it would reduce pump prices for diesel and unleaded by up to 2p per litre across its 303 forecourts from Tuesday.

Avishai Moor, Sainsbury’s head of fuel, said: "We’re glad to be making our customers’ money go even further as they get out and about this summer."

Morrisons had started the price war last week when it reduced the price of unleaded petrol by 2p a litre and cut up to 1p a litre off diesel.

Roger Fogg, Morrisons’ services director, said: "Among post-Brexit fuel price uncertainty, we are doing all we can to hold down prices for our customers.

"When we can make savings we will pass it on to customers."

Peter Cattell, fuel director for Tesco, said: "We know that lots of customers will have plans for the summer holidays, so we’re dropping the price of our fuel to help them enjoy it even more.

"This reduction of up to 2p per litre on petrol and diesel at all our 500 petrol filling stations will mean millions of customers save money by shopping at Tesco."

RAC spokesman Simon Williams praised the current price drop, but said it is a shame it did not come sooner.

He added: "This price cut takes us back to a supermarket price that was last seen in early May. Hopefully other supermarkets will follow suit which will drive prices down across the country."

Luke Bosdet from the AA added: "Drivers are in a good place with pump prices this summer, paying as much as 5p a litre less than a year ago."

Coventry drivers face diesel and petrol price hike as oil costs rise and pound weakens

Coventry motorists are once again being hit in the pocket at the petrol pumps after the cost of diesel reaches its highest price in over a year.

According to figures released by RAC Fuel Watch, the average price for a litre of diesel peaked at £1.13 at the end of September.

The motoring giant also said that petrol almost hit its highest price since August last year after averaging £1.12 per litre at the end of last month.

The price rises mean filling up an average-sized family hatchback with petrol is more than £5 more expensive than at the start of the year, while a tank of diesel is £4 more than in January.

The price increase has been attributed to the rising cost of oil and the weakening of the pound.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “A higher oil price, combined with a weakening pound, is forcing up wholesale fuel prices.

“The wholesale price of diesel is now nearly 9p higher than it was at the start of August and petrol 7.4p higher. The effect of this to date has been gradually rising pump prices.

“While we don’t envisage an immediate hike in prices in October, a lot depends on how markets react to the recent news of the first production cut by Opec nations since 2008, which marks a major move away from the organisation’s long-term over-supply strategy.

“The announcement has already caused oil prices to jump a little, but until more specific details are available it is difficult to predict what the longer term outlook on pump prices, and therefore impact on motorists, will be.”

The figures are set out in weekly reports from the government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Asda cuts cost of fuel and introduces new national price cap

Image

Supermarket chain Asda have confirmed that it will be cutting the cost of fuel by up to 3p per litre.

They’ve introduced a new national cap of 110.7p per litre on unleaded and 112.7p on diesel at all 277 of its filling stations.

The prices come into effect today.

Coventry motorists will benefit from cheaper fuel prices following wholesale prices falling over the past month.

Following the fuel price cut RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “While this level of cut is clearly good news it has come far too late as the wholesale price of fuel has been falling since the end of October when the oil price began to fall again.

“Retailers should have reduced their prices then rather than making one bigger headline-grabbing cut now.

“The RAC called for a cut last week so it’s a case of better late than never.

“The first two weeks of November unfortunately prove that the ‘rocket and feather’ does exist.

“This is a great shame as retailers previously had a good record of lowering their prices in response to wholesale cost savings.

“This will sadly undermine motorists’ trust in fuel retailers and it’s hard not to see it as them taking advantage of the current climate which has led people to think that higher fuel prices are an inevitability simply because of the weaker pound and talk of the rising cost of goods.

“In fact there is still scope to reduce pump prices further as RAC Fuel Watch shows the national average price of petrol should fall from its current 116.68p a litre to nearer 110p.”

Morrisons announces big petrol price cut - but there's a catch

Image

Supermarket giant Morrisons is cutting the cost of petrol to below £1 a litre - but you’ll have to spend £50 in store first.

From today customers who spend more than £50 in store will be able to fill up with unleaded for just 99.p a litre.

Diesel drivers won’t miss out either, paying just over £1 a litre to fuel up.

It’s the first time since the Brexit vote that the cost of fuel has dropped this low, and could see other supermarkets follow suit.

Roger Fogg, services director for Morrisons, says the offer will see forecourts ‘turn the clock back’ to the start of the year when prices were lower.

Available until December 3, it coincides with Black Friday sales week and is designed to help out shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.

Mr Fogg said: “With Christmas around the corner, our customers tell us they very much welcome our help in reducing the cost of their fuel. That’s why we are turning the clock back to the start of this year when petrol prices were typically below £1 a litre.”

It’s the third time in a week that the supermarket chain has cut the price of fuel following a steady increase over the past few months after the Brexit vote caused the value of the pound to drop.

Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s too cut their prices last week by 3p a litre, much to the delight of many motorists.

They've put all their other prices up to pay for it! :fuming:
