I don't know if it's related but it had become a magnet for beggars who used to camp out next to it.

Might also be related to the road widening scheme.

Apparently it was the latter.

Went to photograph the prices sign tonight and it had gone, together with the fuel pumps and the shop!

Spon End petrol station demolished for makeover

Image

The petrol station in Spon End has not been demolished as part of Coventry City Council's on-going air quality works. But it has been confirmed by the council today (March 17) that it is nothing to do with pollution, just the owner deciding to take the opportunity to re-develop.

It was previously believed the garage needed to be knocked down and re-built elsewhere to accommodate the city council's plans to widen the road. However, only a "narrow strip of land" is needed shaved from the station to successfully deliver the scheme.

The changes to the road are being made after the Government said a charging zone would need to be introduced if CCC didn't do something to help reduce nitrogen dioxide levels in the city. Holyhead Road has the highest levels and the aim is to give traffic heading into the city centre more than one main road to use.

The petrol station's owner, Motor Fuel Group, has chosen to knock the current site down and will rebuild with a new layout and expanded shop facilities. A CCC spokesperson told CoventryLive: “The Council requires a narrow strip of land from the petrol station on Spon End to deliver the Local Air Quality Action Plan scheme.

"The owner of the petrol station, Motor Fuels Group, is taking the opportunity to re-develop the petrol station to provide a new layout and expanded shop facilities. They secured planning approval for those works in 2021, and are now on site to carry out the works."

The petrol station will be re-built, once re-modelled, in the same location.

Fuel duty cut by 5p a litre to help motorists

Image

The chancellor has announced a 5p a litre cut to fuel duty as motorists struggle with record fuel prices.

Rishi Sunak said the move, which starts at 6pm on Wednesday and will last until next March, was "the biggest cut to all fuel duty rates ever".

Motoring group RAC said the cut would take £3.30 off the cost of filling a typical 55-litre family car.

Supermarket chain Asda said it would reduce its pump prices by 6p a litre, including a 1p reduction in VAT.

The average price of a litre of petrol has risen by more than 40p since last year's Spring Statement, which means the government is getting an extra 7p per litre in VAT, which is the other tax the government imposes on fuel.

Diesel prices are up by nearly 50p a litre, almost 9p of which is VAT.

The Treasury said the cut was worth £2.4bn and means a one-car family will save £100 on average over the next 12 months.

The average van driver will save £200, it said, while hauliers will save £1,500.

It is the first cut to the main rates of fuel duty in more than a decade.

The Treasury said it had acted now because "unique circumstances globally, including the war in Ukraine, have pushed pump prices up to unprecedented levels".

Any reduction is welcome, but it's also time that the fuel companies started accepting their fair share of the pain. :fuming:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Fresh claims of profiteering as Coventry and Warwickshire petrol stations fail to pass on fuel duty cut

Image

Petrol stations across the country are failing to pass on the Chancellor's fuel duty cut, new figures show. Rishi Sunak slashed fuel duty by 5p a litre in a spring statement move designed to help cash-strapped families.

Factoring in its impact on VAT, the announcement should have produced a saving of 6p per litre. Yet prices have not followed suit at forecourts in Coventry, Warwickshire and right across the land.

According to the AA, the average price of petrol has only dropped 4p per litre, from 167.30p on March 22 to 163.30p on March 28. And the average cost of diesel has been similarly sluggish in coming down, falling just 2.6p per litre from 179.7p to 177.11 over the same time frame.

The data has prompted fresh claims of profiteering at the pumps and caused transport secretary Grant Shapps to urge drivers to boycott petrol stations that refuse to cut prices. Luke Bosdet, the AA’s fuel price spokesman, said: "Why are drivers not surprised that on average a third of the petrol saving has yet to be passed on at the pumps?

"The fuel trade always disputes the accusation that pump prices shoot up like a rocket and fall like a feather. Now we know the truth. Even with Friday’s (March 25) wholesale cost of petrol (72.17p a litre) heading back towards the heights of a fortnight ago (March 7-11, average 72.71p), the Treasury must have expected more from UK forecourts in general.

"Diesel has some excuse, with wholesale costs that had averaged 86.40p in the second week of March reaching 90.3p on Friday, although that should be taking a few days to filter through to the pumps."

The cheapest petrol and diesel rates in Coventry as gas prices soar across Europe

Image

Russia's decision to pull the plug on gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria is set to hit cash-strapped motorists hard at the pumps. Gas prices across Europe are said to have surged as much as 24% today (April 27).

And wholesale oil costs are expected to rise as a result, meaning further hikes for petrol and diesel at UK forecourts. The gas strike from Vladimir Putin, after both Poland and Bulgaria refused to pay for their supplies in Russian rubles, is set to exacerbate forecourt 'profiteering' in Britain.

Howard Cox, founder of FairFuelUK, said: "The UK's shameful fuel supply chain businesses must be held to scrutiny and ordered to pass on oil and wholesale price falls immediately at the pumps. The combination of failing to pass on these price drops is blatant profiteering and must be investigated by the Competition and Market Authority.

"Above all, the Chancellor and Transport Minister should put FairFuelUK's long time call for an independent pump pricing watchdog, PumpWatch, in place now." Petrol and diesel prices have soared across Coventry and Warwickshire, as they have elsewhere in the country.

Costco in Torrington Avenue, Canley, continues to offer the cheapest petrol and diesel in the city by some distance, according to the website petrolprices.com. But its rates of 149.7p per litre and 165.9p per litre, for petrol and diesel respectively (as of April 26), are only open to members.

In terms of open-to-all forecourts, which have updated their rates on petrolprices.com on or since April 25, it's Asda in Brade Drive, Walsgrave, that leads the way on 158.7p, as of April 25. The city's next cheapest petrol was sold for 159.9p, as of April 25, at the Pace (Cromwell Garage) in Torrington Avenue.

The Texaco in Hinckley Road, Walsgrave, sold for the same value, as of April 25, as did the the BP, also in Hinckley Road, on the same date. In terms of diesel, and Coventry filling stations that have updated their prices on or since April 25, it's Morrison's in Skipworth Road, Binley, and Asda in Walsgrave that jointly come out on top at 170.7p.

The Morrison's rate was correct as of April 27, and the Asda charge was right as of April 25. Three Coventry stations were selling diesel at 173.9p on or after April 25. They were Tesco in Clifford Bridge Drive, Walsgrave, Texaco in Hinckley Road and BP in Hinckley Road.

The cheapest petrol and diesel in Coventry as fuel costs climb to '60 per cent of spare income'

Image

The latest hike in petrol costs is set to cost the average UK driver an extra £700 a year - more than 60 per cent of their spare income - new research claimed. Car buying service ChooseMyCar.com used data on their most popular cars to calculate the costs of filling up tanks today, compared to a year ago.

Based on an average mileage of 13,000 miles a year, the cost of filling up a tank just once has gone up by an extra £20. Spread across the course of a year and that's a minimum of £500 more just on fuel.

And, according to the recent Worldwide Wage Report, that equates to more than 60 per cent of the average Brit's spare income. The data comes after a study showed that half of 18-34-year-olds have had to borrow money from friends, family or banks to simply pay for fuel.

The price of diesel had soared to just shy of £2 per litre - 199.9p to be precise - at the BP at Rugby Service Station yesterday (May 19). But what's the situation in Coventry when it comes to petrol and diesel rates?

According to the latest data from petrolprices.com, the city's seven cheapest stations for petrol are:

1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 157.7p (members only / correct as of May 18)

2, Pace (Cromwell Garage), Torrington Avenue, Canley - 159.9p (correct as of May 18)

3=, Asda, London Road, Whitley - 161.7p (correct as of May 18)

3=, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 161.7p (correct as of May 17)

5=, Tesco, Phoenix Way, Little Heath - 161.9p (correct as of May 18)

5=, Texaco (Sandpits Service Station), Sandpits Lane, Keresley, - 161.9p (correct as of May 16)

5=, Tesco, Clifford Bridge Drive, Walsgrave - 161.9p (correct as of May 18)
And the city's seven cheapest stations for diesel (all bar one correct as of May 18) are:

    1,Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley- 171.9p

    2=, Asda, London Road, Whitley - 176.7p

    2=, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 176.7p

4=, Tesco, Lynchgate Road, Cannon Park, 176.9p

4=, Tesco, Clifford Bridge Drive, Walsgrave - 176.9p

4=, Tesco, Phoenix Way, Little Heath - 176.9p

    4=, Sainsbury's, Herald Way, Canley - 176.9p (correct as of May 19)
