Iceland offers over 60s a 10% discount

I don't use Iceland, but for any that do this might be worth knowing...

Iceland offers over-60s 10% discount on shopping bill every week

Iceland is to start offering Brits aged 60 and over a 10% discount on their shopping bills every week as the cost of living squeeze continues to intensify.

The deal will apply for all over-60s and will be available at all branches of both Iceland and The Food Warehouse, the supermarket's bulk-buying store.

The new deal will begin on Tuesday 24 May and will be available every Tuesday.

The 10% discounts will be available in-store only and will apply to all products with with no minimum spend.

In order to receive the discount, over-60s will have to show proof of age at the checkout, which could be a driving license, senior bus pass, senior rail card or Freedom Pass.

Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, said in a statement: “We have a long history of supporting our over-60s customers, such as when we launched ‘Elderly Hour’ at the height of the pandemic.

"The cost of living crisis has made support for these customers even more important, which is why I’m proud that we’re finding new ways to support them, including the launch of this discount. We hope it will help all those in this age category to cut costs where they can.”

In 2020, some Iceland stores opened one hour early to allow older shoppers to shop for food on their own in order to better protect them from COVID-19 exposure and make shopping less stressful during the panic buying seen at the height of the pandemic.

The frozen food specialist also offered £30 vouchers to people receiving the state pension as part of a regional trial last Christmas. Following the success of the trial the supermarket is looking at a national rollout this summer.

Three-quarters of older people in the UK – 9.4 million Brits – are worried about the rising cost of living, according to research for Age UK.

UK inflation soared to a more than 40-year high of 9% in April thanks in part to rising food, energy and fuel prices and the war in Ukraine as soaring energy bills squeeze household budgets.

Last month, the energy price cap, which limits the amount by which bills can rise, rose by 54% from £1,277 to £1,971. It is forecast to rise by a further 40% to £2,800 in October.

Food prices also rose sharply in the year to April, with the Ukraine war driving up the cost of cereals, cooking oil and meat.

Food inflation and non-alcoholic beverages increased to 6.7% – the fastest rate since 2011.

Other retailers beginning to follow suit...

ASDA offers customers massive discount depending on your job amid cost of living crisis

Asda has moved to offer some big discounts to key workers as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

The supermarket giant says it will knock a chunk off the price at the till to support its customers and colleagues in managing their household costs.

It comes as Iceland launched a major discount for shoppers over the age of 60 as warnings over the price of food worry the elderly.

Workers in the NHS, Emergency Services, Social Services, Social care sector and armed forces will all get 10% discount in every Asda store across the UK.

All they have to do is present their Blue Light Card to save money.

Asda say food and soft drinks, George clothing as well as homeware, toys, gifts and optical are all included in their offer.

The move comes following the announcement on Wednesday that UK inflation now stands at 9%.

Hayley Tatum, Asda’s Chief People and Corporate Affairs Officer said: “Family budgets are under huge pressure right now – with our Income Tracker showing household incomes down by £16 per week in March and set to fall further.

"Bringing back the Blue Light discount and removing the qualifying period for our own colleague discount are additional ways we can support our customers and colleagues, alongside our ongoing efforts to reduce prices and invest in our colleague pay.”

Tom Dalby, CEO at Blue Light Card, said: “We are really proud to be working with ASDA. With the cost of living on the rise, I hope this exclusive 10% discount helps families and individuals across the UK on everything from the big food shop to new school clothes.

"Asda has always done so much to show its appreciation to NHS staff and other frontline workers, and this partnership will support millions of blue light workers in the country.”

Bumping this as I'd completely forgotten about it:

Pensioners and over-60s get 10% slashed off shop at this supermarket every Tuesday

As living costs continue to surge, Britons are being urged to make extra checks to find out where they can make additional savings.

British supermarket chain Iceland is offering a helping hand through its over 60s discount scheme, which enables those aged over 60 the opportunity to bag 10 percent off their shop every Tuesday - with no minimum spend - across Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores.

Eligible Britons simply need to bring in a valid form of ID to redeem the discount. This includes a Senior Bus pass, a Driver’s Licence, The Senior Railcard, or a Freedom Pass.

The scheme comes as research increasingly shows pensioners to be one of the most impacted groups by the rising cost of living.

Data from My Pension Expert unveiled that a startling one in five pensioners are skipping meals due to the cost of living crisis.

Commenting on the initiative, Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, said: “We are so pleased with how well the over 60s discount has been received by the public and love hearing stories from customers who are benefiting from the discount.

“The cost of living crisis continues to cause distress in the everyday lives of these customers and that’s why we want to keep doing what we can to support them.”

On the first day that the discount was launched in May 2022, over a third of shoppers who came through Iceland or The Food Warehouse doors used the discount, which saw over 150,000 eligible customers benefitting.
