The real game of Roulette

Postby Blitzkid » Thu Apr 14, 2022 1:08 pm

Roulette goes back to ancient Greek times, the guy that invented it was a real genius, as vast gambling pulling power, but gambling is about Mathematics, numbers, Odds, the odds are 36 to 1, but there are 37 numbers with the Zero, in a strict order, world wise, so it all ways had that advantage to the owner. For me,

The roulette wheel only had two places you could cover five numbers with three chips, working with these, and rigid rules, I found I could win often, this gave the punter great pleasure in beating the odds. I went to Las Vegas, the real home of gambling, but OH MY, in all those hotels there was not one table that was real, they all had double zero's, so I did not have one bet, I toured Grand Canyon. lake Mead and the big dam, sat hours thinking how to destroy it and get away safely, this was my job, the job, I had been trained to do in the Army. At the 'Sergeant York' Casino in Brighton there was a raffle among members, the prizes where tickets for the countries first Lottery, I won second prize 250 quids worth of ticket's. I was offered a couple of hundred quid for them, alas I only won four third prizes, a measly 40 quid.

I'm really interested in the history of gambling, Blitzkid. I've tried several theories of winning at roulette, but ultimately the 'house' always wins because of that slight edge it has due to the zero. I must admit, I always found the double zero wheels very uninviting, not to mention greedy.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

REBBONK
I always found you have to make hard and fast rules, and stick to them, but people like Ladbrokes changed the odds on all there shop games, so I stopped betting with them. Do you know in the fifties you could get 45 to 1 for any three draws on the normal leagues, including 0--0 but the quickly dropped that to 33to1.

My first ever bet, I went too ASCOT on the coach from pool meadow 1949, we got near the track and a car was broken down, the driver knowing the stranded people stopped and gave them a lift -Gordan Richards-Doug Smith and two apprentice, the first and only thing they said was Is this going down the Golden Road and sat down. Every one on the coach had every penny on a horse called the Golden road ridden by G.Richards, it won by three lengths, I have still the paper result from the small booklet that had the results in those days. We came back with crates of beer, all drunk by the time we reached Pool Meadow.

Blitzkid, from memory bookies are very poor losers too? One of my workmates (Denis) took a small nominal amount off his local bookie (Labrokes IIRC?) every Saturday for about 6 weeks. He was advised that his custom was no longer wanted!

I learned a lot from Denis, and not just about the electrical trade.

REBBONK,
Yes, they could always limit your stake, as well as cut the odds. unless you where old man Kray, they did not mess with him, his son's once beat 'him up' and they paid the price, his loyalty was powerful, more than to his sons, they no longer shielded them from the police, and so the police had free talk, and they soon landed in prison with no help from the London Gangs, I kept well clear, just a touch of the cap, or Good morning at the race tracks.

Blitzkid,

I'd really be interested in what you know (and think) about roulette 'systems'.

I'm currently reading (for the umpteenth time) a book by Norman Leigh about how he took a Casino in Nice for rather a lot of money. He also claimed to have trialled his system in the UK and met a lot of hostility. I've also read about a group of MIT students who developed a system for predicting where the ball was likely to fall, which they claimed shifted the odds in their favour.

I personally have my doubts, but the views of someone else would be appreciated.
