A new space will be created in City Arcade where homeless people can go to feel safe during the day

A DIY SOS-style appeal has been launched to help the homeless in Coventry.

‘Simply Cov Family’ is a project where Coventry businesses and people unite to put a stop to homelessness.

A big part of this project will be getting DIY volunteers to form a safer home environment for the homeless - including building bathroom facilities and fixing things.

Fleur Sexton, who is managing director of the project said: "There are lots of amazing services and provisions for homeless people already in existence, but it’s not enough.”

A space has also been allocated by Martin Reeves and the city council for homeless people to go to in the day for a safer environment.

This will take be in City Arcade.

Fleur added: “This direct work with the homeless people will be done by an amazing group of hardworking volunteers called ARC who have shared the experience of addiction and homelessness.”

‘Covfamily’ are also seeking a number of people such as hairdressers, cleaners and home-crafters to assist in improving the mental health of homeless people by teaching them life skills such as cooking and knitting.

They are asking for donations, whether that be food, homeware, books or clothes.

Fleur added: “It’s not about providing shelter, it’s about providing hope and love like we have from our own families."

Fleur will be working alongside Martin Reeves, Trish Willetts and John Dalziel, with partners including the Salvation Army and the ARC.

Covfamily’s vision is to create a welcome community for people who may have suffered for long periods of time and create a safe space away from the every-day risk of abuse.

The on-going support promises to get the homeless to a level where they are suitable to go on work placements and get them back into society.

  • Whereabouts in the city arcade?
  • How do local traders feel about the idea?
  • Why should unpaid volunteers being doing the work the city council should be doing?
