£5 toaster works as well as £100 one

Credit crunched Britons might not need to spend big to get high-quality appliances - if the example of the humble toaster is to be believed.

Consumer group Which? conducted tests of the various toasters on the market for its magazine and found that more expensive does not mean better the Daily Mail reports.

The testers found that a £5 toaster from Sainsburys worked well - scoring 65 out of 100.

A device from John Lewis costing £10 scored 68 comparable with results from other makes tested with all mod cons which cost over £100.

"We found you can buy a decent model from just £5 and that paying more doesn't guarantee you'll get better toast" the Which? testers said in their report.

"You can buy a toaster for anything from £3 to £150 and there are good choices throughout that range."

Overall 74 different makes were tested by Which? over the course of its toaster survey.

Though there appears to be little difference on performance, I wonder which one will last longer?

Guess it's a bit like the cheap kettles you buy - I now favour the £5 value ones from the supermarkets - have paid £40+ for a kettle - and they don't last any longer than the cheap ones.

They usually pack up within the guarantee period - so I just take it back and get a new one - making sure I keep the receipt tho

I bought a £5 toaster from Morrisons and it's rubbish. It only works with one particular size of sliced loaf and to get anything like even toast I have to stop it half way, swap the slices over then restart it.

I bought a Breville kettle 4 years ago and to my amazement it is still going well. It is used several times a day to make cuppas and sometimes for hot water to wash up a few things.
I have also had other makes that haven't lasted a year!

I wouldn't touch those cheapo appliances. I put out an old toaster for the scrap metal lorry to collect ,it was gone within half an hour.
We recently bought a new Delonghi one in the sales.
