The latest statistics show that Coventry's rate of obesity is above the national average - with one area ranking in the top five per cent of all council wards in England

The latest government data on childhood obesity in Coventry has revealed some worrying numbers.

The percentage of children in primary school who are obese or overweight continues to rise - but which areas in Coventry are suffering the most?

Kids in Longford are the most likely in the city to be obese or overweight, the data reveals.

New figures from the National Child Measurement Programme show that a shocking 29 per cent of Year 6 children (those aged 10 and 11) in the ward are considered obese, while a further 44 per cent are overweight.

Similary, 12 per cent of Reception-aged children (four and five year olds) in Longford are obese, and another 25 per cent are heavier than they should be.

It means the area not only has the highest rate of childhood obesity and excess weight in Coventry - it also ranks in the top five per cent of all council wards in England.

Foleshill has similarly high rates of children who are struggling with their weight, with 29 per cent of children in Year 6 and 11 per cent of Reception pupils considered obese.

A further 44 per cent of 10 and 11 year olds and 24 per cent of four and five year olds in the ward are overweight.

Meanwhile, Earlsdon has the lowest proportion of childhood obesity and excess weight in Coventry.

So, the poorest areas of Coventry have the highest rate of obesity and the richest areas have the lowest rate? Anyone would think there was a link between poverty and unhealthy diet. :clown:

Years ago when I was growing up it was called being bonny and I can never recall kids having time off school back then having flu cold sickness and diarrhea MS and as many other ailmemts as they do now with these thin children. wwii cheese was advertised as the A1++ food to eat by the war office now they tell you dont touch cheese.

If government and specialists are that concerned as I told my specialist why are they not doing any thing about these food giants putting so much hydrogenated oil in most of our foods that makes us fat which one top heart specialist stated you might as well eat a block of lard as hydrogenated oil is the worse for causing heart disease also cancers. GM food is fattening as well that means all serials to plus all corn products are GM to which is in tomatoe ketchup to much distroys your liver.
