Work will begin to upgrade the motorway between junctions two and four – a 13.6mile stretch of road – from March next year.

It will cost between £155m to £234m for the work to completed and last between March 2018 until March 2020.

Once completed, it is hoped the stretch of road will allow for increased capacity and reduce congestion for those travelling between Coventry and Birmingham.

Highways England has invited drivers, business owners, and residents to find about more about the plans at a series of public exhibitions.

The exhibitions will offer more information on plans to reduce congestion and improve journey times.

Work will include converting the hard shoulder to create a permanent fourth lane between junctions 2 and 3a.

New electronic information signs, signals, and CCTC cameras will be installed as will nine emergency areas to use in place of the hard shoulder.

A reinforced barrier will be added to improve safety and noise barriers placed in built up areas.

Peter Smith, Highways England smart motorway project sponsor, said: “This is a key corridor between Birmingham and Coventry.

“This work will increase capacity on a busy stretch of road.

“We’re keen to speak to as many as people possible about the scheme at one of our exhibitions where we can answer any questions people may have.”

The exhibitions will take place on Friday, December 15, from 2pm until 7pm, and Saturday December 16, from 10am until 4pm, at Maxstoke Village Hall.

The full address for the venue is Maxstoke Village Hall, Church Lane, Maxstoke, Birmingham, West Midlands, B46 2QN.

There will also be an exhibition on Friday, January 12, from 11am until 7pm, and Saturday, January 13, from 10am until 4pm at Novotel M6 Junction 3, Wilsons Lane, Coventry, CV6 6HL.
