A Coventry pub is feeling flushed with success after its toilets were given the official seal of approval by undercover inspectors.

The Spon Gate in The Skydome has been awarded a platinum star rating by inspectors - the highest award possible - in the Loo of the Year Awards 2016.

The aim of the awards scheme is to highlight and improve standards of ‘away from home’ toilet provision across the UK.

Toilets are rigorously judged by a team of authorised inspectors, who make unannounced visits to hundreds of toilets at sites across the UK.

All of the toilets are graded from bronze to gold with unacceptable toilets not graded at all.

The platinum rating is given only to outlets which offer “exceptional toilets”.

The toilets are judged against numerous criteria, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management.

The Spon Gate, a Wetherspoon pub in Croft Road, is managed by Thomas Clarke.

He said: “I am delighted with the award. Staff at the pub work hard to ensure the toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.”

The Loo of the Year awards 2016 managing director, Mike Bone, said: “The toilets at The Spon Gate have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained.

“The pub richly deserves its platinum award ˗ the highest individual award the judges can deliver.”

The latest accolade is not the first time the Spon Gate has been recognised in the Loo of the Year Awards.

In 2013 it received a coveted gold star rating.

So between 2013 and 2016 it had no star rating at all?
