The city is among the worst in UK for motorists being stuck in traffic jams
Drivers in Coventry wasted more than an entire day sat in traffic last year - making it the second worst congestion blackspot in the country behind London.
Figures show that motorists spent 28 hours stuck in tailbacks in the city in 2015 - up 34 per cent from 21 hours in 2012.
The roadworks at Tollbar Island and regular heavy traffic on arterial routes like London Road and Foleshill Road were among the problem areas that contributed to the huge number of wasted hours.
In an analysis for The Sunday Times, traffic information company Inrix examined congestion over a four-year period in 18 urban areas, which include more than 50 per cent of the UK population.
The company uses real-time traffic data to establish average speeds and congestion levels and compares this with typical trips taken by motorists, and how often they drive, to calculate how many hours are “wasted in congestion”.
The average number of hours lost by drivers in traffic jams across the 18 areas since 2012 increased by 27 per cent - from 45.6 hours to 58 hours.
London came out on top as the worst city for congestion with drivers spending 101 hours a year - more than 12 working days - stuck in rush-hour traffic, up 40 per cent from 2012.
