Coventry residents are recycling less and less waste, according to new figures.

Residents recycled just 34 per cent of waste in 2014/15, less than the 37 per cent they recycled in 2010/11, putting the city a lowly 290th in the country.

However neighbouring Stratford is among the most environmentally friendly areas in England.

People there came ninth in England for recycling and composting in 2014/15.

The majority of the area’s household waste was recycled or composted at 60 per cent, up from 59 per cent in 2010/11.

A Coventry City Council spokesman said: "Coventry’s recycling figures have fallen slightly since the scheme was introduced in 2009.

"However, the city still compares favourably to those of a similar size and with similar rates and methods of collection.

"To try and encourage people to recycle more, the council last year launched the Coventry Recycling Club, which rewards people and their community for their recycling performance.

"And last month Coventry University launched the new ‘Your rubbish’ app.

"This has been aimed at residents and students in the city and acts as a quick and easy way of finding out everything you need to know so you can recycle more and help the environment – from checking your collection day to which items can be recycled.

“We are also helping people to understand what they can recycle by leaving tags on bins that have been contaminated with the wrong waste.

"We are hoping this will help people to understand what can go in each bin and that all these things together will help the city recycle more.”

People in Leamington and Warwick did similarly well to Stratford as they ranked 37th in England for recycling and composting in 2014/15.

The majority of the area’s household waste was recycled or composted at 55 per cent, up from 49 per cent in 2010/11.

Nuneaton and Bedworth is now doing better than the national average, recycling 45 per cent of its household waste in 2014/15.

The area improved in the last five years, as it recycled 33 per cent of its household waste in 2010/11.

Rugby remained above the national average, recycling 46 per cent of its household waste in 2014/15, but worst than it was five years ago when it recycled 51 per cent.

Are we comparing like for like here? The city has changed an awful lot since 2011.

I'd like to see how these figures are made up before agreeing with what looks like a superficial conclusion.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
