Coventry is the sixth best place in the country to work, according to a new study.

The university city and home of Jaguar Land Rover finished ahead of Manchester, Oxford and Birmingham in a list based on how easy it is to get a job, affordability of housing and employee satisfaction.

With a population of more than 325,000 people, the average salary in Coventry is £35,000 and the average house price is £184,397.

The most popular jobs in the city are maintenance engineers, sales managers and customer service advisors.

Cambridge, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Leeds and Peterborough were the top five in a league table compiled by jobs site Glassdoor.

The emergence of some of Britain’s industrial and northern cities has meant that London is outside the top 20 of this year’s list.

“Cambridge has long had a reputation for one of Britain’s most loved cities, but now it’s emerged as a prime spot for high-tech companies which is clearly having an impact on where people decide to live and work,” said Dr Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor’s chief economist.

“These results are a reminder that although there are more jobs in London and employees are generally pretty satisfied, it is a competitive place to work and an expensive place to live.

“Towns and cities such as Coventry offer decent salaries and job prospects combined with a lower cost of living which means your money will go further, you can save, and still have a good quality of life.”

Louise Wall, group commercial director of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is recognition of Coventry as a great place to live and work due to the varied industries and the many great businesses we have based here.

“We still have a very strong automotive and manufacturing sector but other sectors are growing and thriving too, bringing a range of new opportunities.

“And when you couple what Coventry has to offer alongside Warwickshire in terms of our location, our universities, visitor attractions and green spaces, it’s easy to see why this study has drawn this conclusion.”
