Eddie Izzard has not ruled out an unlikely bid to become a member of parliament for Coventry at the next general election.

The stand-up comedian told the Telegraph he would be happy to serve as the city’s MP as he works towards his ambition of standing as a Labour Party candidate during the 2020 election.

Mr Izzard made the comments as he visited the University of Warwick to discuss the impending EU referendum due to be held on June 23.

Asked if he might consider standing before 2020 if there was a by-election in Coventry, he said: “I want to be an MP in 2020, I probably won’t go for a by-election, I’ll probably go for the general election because I have to play out my career.

“My career is in a wonderful place and I’ve worked very hard for it.”

He added: “I have no idea where I’m going to be a member of parliament, but I’d be happy to be a member of parliament anywhere in the UK.”
