Damning report calls for 'major overhaul' of dietary guidelines and advises people to stop counting calories

Cutting back on butter, cream, cheese and other fatty foods is fuelling the obesity epidemic with disastrous consequences for health, experts have warned.

In a damning report that accuses major public health bodies of colluding with the food industry, the National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration said most of what we are told about healthy eating is wrong.

Calling for a 'major overhaul' of dietary guidelines, it claimed that far from demonising fat, we should be eating more of it.

It also described sunflower oil as 'barely a food', advised people to stop counting calories and warned that exercising does not help with weight loss.

The controversial claims have been criticised by other experts who accused the report's authors of cherry picking evidence to suit their own arguments.

But the report's authors say the epidemic's roots lie in the modern-day obsession with low-fat diets. The report cites studies which show a higher-fat, lower-carb diet to be superior.

It states: 'Eating a diet rich in full-fat dairy – such as cheese, milk and yoghurt – can actually lower the chance of obesity.

'The most natural and nutritious foods available – meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds, olives, avocados – all contain saturated fat.'

The report also argued that the science of food has been 'corrupted by commercial influences', with food industry representatives having a major influence on Public Health England's Eatwell Guide.

Co-author of the report, Aseem Malhotra, is a founding member of the Public Health Collaboration – a charity made up of dieticians, scientists and doctors.

He said promoting low-fat foods was 'perhaps the biggest mistake in modern medical history resulting in devastating consequences for public health'. The consultant cardiologist added: 'Eat fat to get slim, don't fear it, fat is your friend. It's now truly time to bring back the fat.'

As kids weren't we always told that dairy produce was good for us? There weren't many tubbies around in those days!

Of course, in those days most cooking was done from scratch. :stir:

Yes Rebbonk my mum always cooked from scratch as do I even curries. We only had sweets and crisps at the week end if we were lucky .

Cheese was rated AA+ food during the rationing I ve even read recently cheese helps with loosing weight.

When you buy low fat foods more sugar is added which is worse.

Germany supplies us with cake mixture the shops then bake this mixture a few years back Germany had mixed this mixture wrong putting to much of one ingredient into the cake mixture which said would kill us some arrived here in the UK besides other countries when I was a kid mum made our cakes no poison over doses could be in that mixture.

Gelatin is naturally from the bones of animals now the Germans boil up the fat and skin of the pig to make gelatin which is put into all our foods and sweets which children eat.

There are gases in tins especially baked beans which can trigger heart attacks also how they store our apples .

I love cheese, but sadly it doesn't love me back. I only need to look at a decent piece of cheese these days and I'm crippled with a gout attack. Unfortunately, the only cheese I can eat without bringing on the gout is that rubbery, milt taste stuff that the supermarkets sell. Frankly, I rarely bother.

Yeah Melisandre, I have to be so careful. It's actually surprising what can trigger an attack. I had a very bad attack a few years back, my foot swelled up like a balloon and I truthfully couldn't walk. The pain was the worst I've ever had. Mrs R even had to go to the doctor's for me to get some powerful anti-inflammatories.

I like real ale and that's often a culprit. - The darker the beer, the more likely it is to trigger an attack. - I don't over indulge these days.

Cherries are a known enemy of gout, but they don't work with me. Just as well really, as I'm not that keen on them. So, for now it's careful watching of food for purines and anti-inflammatory pain killers at the first sign of an attack.

I knew port and good life style of food can cause gout. Elder flower growing in hedge rows is a very good anti inflammatory a doctor back in the day discovered it he always tipped his hat each time he passed an Elder tree.
My mum use to pick the white flower put it in a pan of water boil then simmer for a few minutes strain and drink the water left over from it. Sorry to hear your in so much pain.
