Council deputy takes 'early retirement' - with role axedThe deputy chief executive of Coventry City Council is to take ‘early retirement’.
The authority has not confirmed when Martin Yardley, who is deputy chief executive for place, will leave his position.
But the role will not be replaced, a spokesman told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Figures in the Town Hall Rich List 2019, based on 2017/18 pay, show he earned a total salary of £151,948 including a pension.
No details of his early-retirement have been revealed.
However, final decisions are likely to have been made at an audit and procurement committee last week, which met in private to discuss what it called early retirement 'in the interests of the efficiency of the service’.
A spokesman for the council said today (Wednesday): “Martin Yardley is taking early retirement, a decision which allows the council to reassess the strategic capacity of the organisation.
“The role is to be deleted meaning a saving from salaries at the top of the organisation and reflects the fact that staff numbers across the organisation have reduced by a more than a third since 2010.
“An exact date for Martin’s departure will be confirmed once our transition planning is complete.
“Details of his exit were agreed by Audit Committee, which has cross-party representation, and although we cannot go into details at this stage, no enhancement was given.”
