Totally agree Dutchman.

Duggins is going to be no better than Lucas. One can only hope that the good citizens of this city see through the charade and remove them from office at the first opportunity.

My only worry is that I see nothing worth voting for in their place. I was at school with Blundell and frankly am very surprised he's where he is!

Coventry's £210k council chief won't be leaving for Greater Birmingham post

Coventry City Council’s chief executive will not apply for the top job at the new West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Martin Reeves has been filling the chief executive role at the WMCA, commonly referred to as ‘Greater Birmingham’ , on an interim basis for more than a year.

The role has seen Mr Reeves, who receives more than £210,000 a year in pay and pension benefits from Coventry taxpayers , regularly spend three days a week working in Birmingham.

That led to questions over his ability to adequately perform his Coventry role, although Mr Reeves defended his decision to take on the unpaid position insisting he would not have taken it on “if I didn’t think I had the ability, the time or the structure for both jobs”.

Mr Reeves has previously insisted he was not interested in taking the job on a permanent basis, but he has now officially announced he will not apply for the role - being advertised with a salary of £160,000 to £180,000.

Mr Reeves will continue in his interim chief executive role until a permanent chief executive of the WMCA is appointed, expected to be in September.

West Midlands Combined Authority replaces Coventry council's Martin Reeves as chief executive

COVENTRY council chief executive Martin Reeves is to finally return full-time to his highly paid role after being replaced at the West Midlands Combined Authority.

The new regional body has appointed its first permanent chief executive – Deborah Cadman, currently chief executive at Suffolk County Council – who will release Mr Reeves from his interim WMCA chief executive role.

Mr Reeves’ dual role for both Coventry council and the WMCA since last year has been controversial, as highlighted by the Coventry Observer.

Opposition councillors had complained that Coventry council taxpayers were remunerating him with a £175,000 salary for a full-time job – yet he was being seconded at least two days a week to the combined authority.

Mr Reeves and Labour council leaders argued the role in developing the new regional body was important for Coventry and Coventry City Council – one of seven councils with full membership of the WMCA.

The WMCA, in announcing the appointment of Ms Cadman, added: “Martin will ensure a smooth handover with Deborah and then return full time to his Chief Executive role in Coventry in September.

Since we've only had him part-time for so long, presumably that's how he's returning to us? Part-time with salary to suit! :stir:

Council deputy takes 'early retirement' - with role axed

Image

The deputy chief executive of Coventry City Council is to take ‘early retirement’.

The authority has not confirmed when Martin Yardley, who is deputy chief executive for place, will leave his position.

But the role will not be replaced, a spokesman told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Figures in the Town Hall Rich List 2019, based on 2017/18 pay, show he earned a total salary of £151,948 including a pension.

No details of his early-retirement have been revealed.

However, final decisions are likely to have been made at an audit and procurement committee last week, which met in private to discuss what it called early retirement 'in the interests of the efficiency of the service’.

A spokesman for the council said today (Wednesday): “Martin Yardley is taking early retirement, a decision which allows the council to reassess the strategic capacity of the organisation.

“The role is to be deleted meaning a saving from salaries at the top of the organisation and reflects the fact that staff numbers across the organisation have reduced by a more than a third since 2010.

“An exact date for Martin’s departure will be confirmed once our transition planning is complete.

“Details of his exit were agreed by Audit Committee, which has cross-party representation, and although we cannot go into details at this stage, no enhancement was given.”
