The Archbishop of Canterbury said it was “outrageous” to condemn people who fear large scale immigration as racist.

Justin Welby, a former canon at Coventry Cathedral, said people were entitled to fear the impact that the influx of large numbers of migrants could have on their communities.

In an interview with Parliament’s The House magazine , he said that the scale of the migrant crisis meant such anxieties were entirely reasonable.

“Fear is a valid emotion at a time of such colossal crisis. This is one of the greatest movements of people in human history. Just enormous. And to be anxious about that is very reasonable,” he said.

“There is a tendency to say ‘Those people are racist’, which is just outrageous, absolutely outrageous.”

He said it was essential that the “genuine fear” that people felt about mass immigration was listened to and resources put in place to address their concerns.

“In fragile communities particularly - and I’ve worked in many areas with very fragile communities over my time as a clergyman - there is a genuine fear: what happens about housing? What happens about jobs? What happens about access to health services?” he said.

He said that with the right support, the British people had shown they were able to deal “brilliantly” with the challenges which such situations created.

“It is simply a question of the scale on which we are prepared to act, in a way that spreads the load so it can be managed,” he said.

“Fear is justified, I wouldn’t want to criticise that for a moment, but so is hope wholly justified, because we have the capacity. We’re those kind of people, we always have been.”

What about our disabled with these cuts when they have to make a choice on paying out for a career or bedroom tax which they can be evicted for if not paid or jail not affording to pay council tax will they be offered a home or health care if our hospitals are full through falling or hypothermia or injuring them selves with lack of care and heat .
What about our own homeless and children born and bred here who can not get a housed. Oh I forgot money and slave labour by interbreeding comes first.

Perhaps jail would be best for our disabled they at least will be kept warm and fed properly get hospital treament the staff would help them out of bed take them to the toilet bathe them also they can play games watch tv with out paying out a penny.

I think you only need to look at Sweden or the current events in Germany (largely unreported in our press) to see why people don't want this current wave of immigrants.

Controlled immigration to bring in skills that you need is fine, but just throwing open the doors to all and sundry is madness. We can't afford what we currently have, our infrastructure is falling apart, bringing in more people isn't going to help.

I see real trouble ahead for Europe and for this country if the nettle isn't grasped.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
