Cash-savvy residents in Coventry have raked in more than £20,000 by renting out their driveways to high street shoppers.

More and more people are choosing to pre-book a private parking space rather than paying the city’s public parking rates, according to new figures from parking website JustPark.

And some residents are expected to earn up to £500 per space as they cash in on the Christmas rush by renting out their driveways throughout December.

Coventry is the 15th most expensive UK city for parking, according to the study conducted by JustPark - with shoppers being charged an average of £14 for 24 hours at public car parks.

This appears to be playing a major part in the 80 per cent increase in local driveway bookings over the last 12 months. The numbers have risen to 640 between December 2014 and November 2015, compared to 350 for the previous year.

JustPark say Coventry homeowners have already made a total of over £20,000 through renting out their driveways - with earnings up by 70 per cent this year.

Residents are charging drivers an average of £5.60 per day to park in their spare spaces, but those living closer to the city centre are making considerably more.

JustPark say some drivers are willing to pay up to £25 to avoid car park queues and secure a conveniently located space.

One homeowner who rents out her driveway is Dav Bachra, who lives on the Parkside estate in Cheylesmore.

The 40-year-old has already seen her parking space used 35 times over last few months at a cost of £5 per day.

Dav said: “I went to London for a weekend trip and was searching for cheap parking when I came across JustPark.

“I used the site to find somewhere to park and when I got back I thought about how I could utilise my driveway at home.

“There’s not much you have to do as the site manages the bookings and the financial side behind it.

“I didn’t know how much interest it would generate but there has been quite a bit.

“I’d recommend it to anyone who has a spare driveway as is requires hardly any effort from yourself, it’s really convenient and the extra cash goes quite a long way.”

Nice of the local rag to draw this to the attention of the tax authorities. :clown:
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I've long been of the opinion that every householder should be allocated one official parking space and then allowed to choose whether they use it themselves or rent it to someone else.
