A cleaner was awarded £12,566 compensation by Coventry City Council - after bruising her feet on a vacuum cleaner.

The payment was made even though she had followed “incorrect procedures” when using the Henry, according to the Daily Mirror.

The figure was part of almost £1m paid out by the authority over the past three years to its staff who had injured themselves in the workplace.

The total of £972,328 was the sixth highest out of all councils in England and Wales.

The information came from Freedom of Information requests which show that councils in England and Wales made 3,100 payments totalling £30.2million between 2012 and 2014.

The real figure is higher because 20 per cent of the 373 authorities did not respond.

Jonathan Isaby of the TaxPayers’ Alliance told the Daily Mirror said: “Taxpayers will be astounded at these payouts and the ludicrous things they’re for.”

Some of the compensation bills were footed by taxpayers, while some were paid by the council’s insurers.

Bradford paid out the most compensation with a figure of £1,4m.

Must have been a really nasty bruise!

I suppose in many cases it's simpler (and cheaper) just to pay out.
