Conservative minister resigns over sex scandal

David Cameron was plunged into a double crisis after one of his ministers resigned over a sex scandal and another MP defected to Ukip.



On the eve of the Conservative Party’s final conference before next year’s election, Brooks Newmark quit as Minister for Civil Society after he was caught sending explicit photographs of himself to women over the internet.

Sources told The Telegraph that Mr Newmark had sent the pictures to women who posed as users of a social networking website as part of a tabloid newspaper sting operation.

In a statement, Mr Newmark said: "I have decided to resign as Minister for Civil Society having been notified of a story to be published in a Sunday newspaper.

“I would like to appeal for the privacy of my family to be respected at this time. I remain a loyal supporter of this Government as its long term economic plan continues to deliver for the British people."

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister has accepted Brooks Newmark's resignation from his role as Minister for Civil Society.”

Mr Newmark will be replaced by Rob Wilson, a former aide to the Chancellor George Osborne.

At the Newmarks' six storey townhouse, worth several million pounds, in Belgravia in central London, dogs could be heard barking from inside but nobody answered the door on Saturday night.

Tory MP is hit with second sex scandal in two weeks



Tory MP Brooks Newmark, who announced his resignation from the party last night, has been hit with a second sex scandal in just two weeks.

The dad-of-five stepped down as Minister for Civil Society after the Sunday Mirror revealed he had sent sexual images of himself to an undercover reporter posing as a Tory activist.

But the Sun on Sunday claims to have uncovered evidence Newmark sent sexually explicit images to a second woman.

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, Newmark said he "craved adrenaline and risk" and blamed stress at work for driving him to "increasingly erratic behaviour".

He added: "I was the man who had everything ... Now my political career is in ruins.

"I have traumatised my family and let down my constituents and my colleagues. Deep inside, I knew I was playing with fire. Now it has consumed me and my family.

"Now, in response to what seems to be a new text-and-tell story, I am standing down as an MP at the next election.

He tried to kid us he was standing down "on principal" when all the time he knew there was further incriminating evidence against him
