Tower Hamlets statement

Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles told MPs he is sending in commissioners to take control over certain functions at Tower Hamlets council, following the publication of a report from accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCooper exposed cronyism "risking the corrupt spending of public funds".

Speaking to MPs on 4 November 2014, Mr Pickles said he was unsure if the report amounted to evidence of fraud but it had identified irregularities in the way the council awarded grants, contracts and sold assets and so would be passed to the police.

Mr Pickles' opposite number in Labour, Hilary Benn, said he supported the local government secretary's decision to use his powers to intervene in the council.

Gannon, take note!
