Coventry makes UK top ten for one-night stands

Coventry has been revealed as one of UK’s top ten places - for one-night stands.

New research has revealed Coventry is placed sixth in a table of places where people claimed to have had casual sex over the festive season.

In the national survey, nine per cent of people questioned from the Coventry area claimed to have had a one-night-stand over Christmas and New Year.

That was significantly less than Swansea, which topped the chart at 19 per cent.

Coventry out-scored Newcastle, Manchester and Liverpool in the revealing survey, commissioned by the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service.

The people of Newcastle were among the most restrained with just four per cent admitting to a one-night stand over the festive period.

The online poll investigated the sexual health and habits of 2,000 UK adults. Worryingly, it found that 14 per cent of people in Coventry put themselves at increased risk of an STI by having sex without a condom, with someone other than a long-term partner.

Nationally it was the under 25s who admitted to one-night-stands most over the party season. However, it was the 25-34s who left themselves more open to the risk of contracting an STI, with one in ten having unprotected sex with more than one person.

But it is not just those in casual relationships that could be burdened with an unexpected post-Christmas ‘present’. A third of people who contracted an STI in the past, caught it from someone they were in a long-term relationship with.

Dr Nitin Shori, Medical Director of the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service and a working NHS GP, said: “The New Year is a notorious time for STI cases and we’re preparing for a busy month. The research suggests many from Coventry could be starting 2014 with an STI shock.’’
