Petrol prices hit another record high
Petrol prices have hit another record, according to industry analysts Experian Catalist.
The average price of a litre of unleaded petrol hit 140.20 pence.
Higher oil prices, driven by concerns about Iran, have been behind the rising price of fuel. Crude oil prices have risen 12% since January.
The chancellor confirmed this week that a 3p per litre fuel duty rise will take effect on 1 August, drawing criticism from the motoring industry.
The RAC said petrol prices had hit "another painful barrier".
"A figure of £1.40 a litre is a massive price for people to have to pay and there is no end in sight to rising prices," said RAC technical director David Bizley.
"The way things are going the planned duty rise will see average petrol prices hit the £1.50-a-litre mark - forcing more and more people who need their cars off the road."
Chancellor George Osborne has pledged that fuel duty will not rise faster than inflation, unless oil prices were to fall below £45 a barrel.
Garages in Coventry and Warwickshire accused of cashing in on fuel crisis
SOME garages in Coventry and Warwickshire have been accused of cashing in on the fuel shortage after prices rocketed overnight.
The cost of diesel and unleaded at some filling stations where stocks had not run dry rose by as much as 4p a litre in the space of just 48 hours.
That could add as much as £2.80 to fill up many average family cars with a 70-litre tank.
On Thursday, the cost of diesel at the Jet garage on the A45 in Millison’s Wood, near Meriden, was 148.9p per litre – but by yesterday it had shot up to 151.9 p per litre. And furious drivers contacted the Telegraph to say that at the Jet garage on the A45 near Tollbar Island, the petrol price went up by 2p per litre even as they queued to fill up on Thursday.
One man, who did not want to be named, said: “I was disgusted. When we asked what was going on the management just laughed. I told them it was out of order taking advantage of the fuel situation and ripping the public off but they couldn't care less.
“I hope that when this is over people boycott this garage, then we’ll see how funny they find it.”
Nobody from either garage was available for comment, but oil firm Conoco, which owns the Jet brand, said all of its 380 UK sites were independently owned, meaning individual garages set their own prices.
The Jet website says: “The brand has become synonymous with low prices and value for money.”
Panic buying amid fears of a strike by tanker drivers has led to widescale shortages of fuel.
The Tesco garage in Cannon Park, Coventry, was closed at 7pm on Thursday, and there was no unleaded at Tesco at Arena Park yesterday.
Prof Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, which speaks for motorists, said drivers would be “furious” if some garages were profiteering from the shortage.
He said: “Some garages might themselves be being hit by price hikes imposed by their suppliers, but people would be understandably furious if petrol stations were trading on drivers’ misery and fear to push up prices above the record levels we were seeing even before this crisis.”
And an AA spokesman said: “It could have been a number of factors: the wholesale price of fuel has risen above record levels this week and petrol stations can pay more for deliveries which are out of their routine, or they just saw an opportunity to profiteer.”
But Brian Madderson, of the Retail Motor Industry, which represents independent forecourts, said there was no evidence of garages cashing in.
“There is no evidence of price profiteering, with polls indicating pump price increases of less than one per cent over the past week,” he said.
“This is in line with the movement of wholesale costs.
“Undoubtedly, there will be isolated cases of higher pump increases for financial reasons attributable to that particular retailer.”
