Lawyer from Coventry accused of dumping girlfriend by pretending to be dead

The unnamed solicitor's former partner only found out she had been conned when she tried to attend his funeral

The organisation which regulates solicitors will not be taking any action against a Coventry-based solicitor who is alleged to have dumped his girlfriend by pretending he had died.

The identity of the ‘mystery’ lawyer has not been revealed but the circumstances were outlined by the Roll On Friday website, which offers a tongue-in-cheek take on the legal world each week.

The unnamed solicitor was reported to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) by the mother of the girlfriend he is alleged to have dumped by having a family member text her to say he had died.

The truth was ultimately revealed after the lawyer’s former girlfriend tried to attend his funeral.

Roll on Friday said: “The Coventry-based lawyer dated the woman in 2013.

“But one night she received a text from his mobile phone purporting to be written by another member of his family.

“It conveyed the shocking news that after a very short illness he had died suddenly.

“In subsequent text conversations the ‘family member’ reluctantly provided details of the funeral, explaining that it was taking place a considerable distance away.

“Unperturbed, the grieving woman made the journey to the service, only to discover that staff had no idea what she was talking about.”

Roll on Friday went on to explain how the lawyer was exposed when the woman’s suspicious mother contacted his employer and discovered he was not dead and still working for them.

She subsequently reported him to the police, and to the SRA for “bringing his trusted profession into disrepute”.

But the SRA said there would be no action against the solicitor regarding the allegation.

An SRA spokesman told the Telegraph: “Other than in certain circumstances, we can only discuss complaints that have led to formal action.

“There has been no such formal action taken against the solicitor mentioned to us for such a complaint.

“When assessing complaints about solicitors, we look at the evidence available to us, and the risk any such alleged misconduct poses to interests of clients if repeated.”

I really think this guy ought be named. Potential clients have a right to know about those they are dealing with don't they? Would you want to deal with such a spineless little ****, possibly someone you are entrusting with your freedom or future?

Mind you, I rate solicitors as either bad or appalling, having had to sort out the messes they've left for me.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Legally he has done nothing wrong as the unfortunate girl was not a client he was acting for. The SRA can't do anything about his private affairs like dumping his girlfriend albeit in an appalling, spineless, despicable manner. She is better off without such a filthy, low-life cad. I hope all his friends will now get to find out what kind of a person he really is.
