Coventry's cheapest petrol and diesel stations amid biggest daily price jump in 17 years

Image

Hard-up motorists were hit in the pocket once again after the price of petrol saw its biggest daily jump in 17 years. Petrol shot up more than 2p a litre at forecourts across the land yesterday to heap even more financial pressure on cash-strapped drivers.

The average price of petrol rose to 180.73p per litre on Tuesday, motoring group the RAC said. Meanwhile, the average price of diesel rose by almost 1.5p to another record high of 186.57p per litre, making the cost of filling a 55-litre family car £102.61.

The RAC said the average cost of filling a typical family car with petrol was now £99.40 and could exceed £100 by tomorrow. Soaring fuel prices are said to have been driven by the war in Ukraine and moves to reduce Europe's dependence on Russian oil.

Motoring groups have raised concerns retailers are not passing on to customers the government's 5p per litre fuel duty cut, announced back in March. A government plan to name and shame petrol stations that fail to do so is "still in the works", the BBC reported.

The government says any increases in VAT receipts it gets from rising fuel prices will largely be offset by reduced household spending and VAT on other items. So, what does it all mean for motorists in Coventry when it comes to petrol and diesel rates?

According to the latest data from petrolprices.com, the city's eight cheapest stations for petrol are:

1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 166.7p (members only / correct as of June 7)

2, Morrisons, Skipworth Road, Binley - 170.7p (June 4)

3, Gulf, Henley Road, Bell Green - 171.5p (June 7)

4=, Tesco, Phoenix Way, Little Heath - 171.9p (June 4)

4=, Texaco, Hinkley Road, Walsgrave - 171.9p (June 4)

And the city's seven cheapest stations for diesel (all bar one correct as of May 18) are:

1,Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley- 166.7p (members only / correct as of June 7)

2, Pace (Cromwell Garage), Torrington Avenue, Canley - 179.9p (June 1)

Petrol station in our area where price has tipped £2 a litre

Image

This is the first shocking sight of fuel prices topping 200p a litre in our area. The huge price awaits drivers stopping at the BP garage at Rugby Services just off J1 of the M6.

Those filling up with unleaded are paying 202.9p per litre, while diesel drivers have to fork out 204.9p. It comes as the AA president says the past few days are the "worst week of pump pain so far for drivers".

Edmund King is urging motorists to "cut out shorter journeys" by car as fuel prices continue to spiral, and instead to "walk or cycle to save money".

The average cost of filling a typical 55-litre family car exceeded £100 for the first time on Wednesday.

Edmund King said: "This is the worst week of pump pain so far for drivers. We would urge drivers at the moment to cut out shorter car journeys if they are able to do so, and walk or cycle to save money.

"Almost one fifth of AA members are already doing this. But by changing your driving style you can also save up to 15 per cent on fuel costs. These crippling fuel costs are hitting home so drivers need to take all the steps they can to stay mobile."

Labour has called for the Government to investigate why the fuel duty cut previously announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak had not been passed on at the petrol pump.

Setting out measures to tackle the rising cost of living, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves told Times Radio: "We know that the market for petrol and diesel is not working properly, and even when the Government reduced duty back in March it was not passed onto consumers.

"That is why the Government really must get the Competition and Markets Authority to very quickly do an analysis of what is going on in that sector so that when the duty is cut it is actually passed onto consumers.

"The whole point of the cut in fuel duty was to give some relief to customers and yet most people have never experienced that 5p cut in fuel duty."

Social media (F/B) seems to have a strategy of boycotting fuel stations by rotation. This week they are boycotting Shell stations.

This may well be some sort of a plan, but when about half of the cost is made up from taxes and taxes upon taxes, I can't help feeling that they might be aiming at the wrong target.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

The cheapest and most expensive petrol and diesel pumps in Coventry right now

Image

A new investigation of fuel prices in Coventry has been carried out by CoventryLive amid rocketing national prices. While some places are still reasonably priced (in the current climate), we found three places selling at 192.9p a litre in our city.

Despite wholesale oil costs falling this week, the average price of a litre of diesel at UK forecourts has reached a new high. According to figures from data firm Experian, the average price of diesel crept up to 197.1p per litre yesterday, perilously close to the dreaded milestone of £2 per litre.

And the average price of petrol on Tuesday, June 22, the most recent figure available from monitors, hit a record 189.3p per litre, which the AA branded a 'disgrace'. Just twelve months ago diesel cost 133.5p per litre, on average, and petrol was 131.1p.

That equates to a wallet-crippling price hike of 48% for diesel and 44% for petrol. AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet said: "With petrol continuing to set new records more than a fortnight after the wholesale price started to fall, the new record is nothing short of a disgrace.

"Rush-hour travellers who might have taken the train are being forced into their cars by the strike, particularly for local journeys. To add to their woes, the fuel trade is either on a deliberate collision course with the Government or they just don't care.

"The Competition and Markets Authority has launched its probe into road fuel prices and, with previous investigations coming out in favour of fuel companies, the trade probably thinks the same will happen this time. The AA and its 13 million members hope that the competition watchdog will dig deep into what is going on with these crippling and unjustified pump prices."

So, what's the situation in terms of petrol and diesel prices in Coventry? According to petrolprices.com, the city's six cheapest stations for petrol are:

1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 176.7p (members only / correct as of June 22)

2, Gulf, Dunchurch Highway (A45), Allesley - 182.7p (June 16)

3, Texaco, Hinckley Road, Walsgrave - 183.9p (June 19)

4=, Morrisons, Holyhead Road, Spon End - 184.7p (June 18)

4=, Morrisons, Skipworth Road, Binley - 184.7p (June 19)

4=, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 184.7p (June 21)

And the city's seven cheapest stations for diesel are:

1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 186.9p (members only / correct as of June 22)

2, Gulf, Dunchurch Highway (A45), Allesley - 190.7p (June 16)

3, Texaco, Station Avenue, Tile Hill - 190.9p (June 15)

4, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 192.7p (June 18)

5=, Sainsbury's, Austin Drive, Courthouse Green - 192.9p (June 18)

5=, Texaco, Foleshill Road, Foleshill -192.9p (June 15)

5=, BP, Hinckley Road, Walsgrave - 192.9p (June 15)

Fuel retailers accused of profiteering as UK petrol prices hit record

Image

Fuel retailers have faced accusations of profiteering as petrol prices hit new highs despite easing wholesale costs.

Unleaded petrol reached a fresh record of 191.05p a litre on Sunday, while diesel hit new highs of 199.09p on Saturday, meaning a 55-litre family car would cost £109.42 to fill up.

The price rises will intensify the debate around pricing at the forecourts while Britons battle the cost of living crisis.

Retailers have been accused of not passing on a 5p cut in fuel duty, announced in Rishi Sunak’s spring statement in March, to consumers. The Competition and Markets Authority is investigating the matter and is due to report back on 7 July.

Fuel prices had been pushed up as oil soared after Russia invaded Ukraine, but prices of the commodity have eased off in recent weeks amid increasing fears over a global recession.

The RAC fuel spokesperson, Simon Williams, said: “We are struggling to see how retailers can justify continuing to put up their unleaded prices as the wholesale cost of petrol has reduced significantly.

“This is sadly a classic example of ‘rocket and feather’ pricing in action, and one which the Competition and Markets Authority will no doubt be looking at very closely. It seems as if retailers are making matters worse for themselves by not lowering their forecourt prices despite having a clear opportunity to do so.”

Williams said retailers may be “protecting profits” in case wholesale costs soar again.

Howard Cox, the founder of the FairFuelUK Campaign, said: “I don’t think it’s fair to blanket all retailers together.

“There are certainly some of the big branded retailers who are unscrupulous but there are many independents who are making a few pence a litre. The role of the refineries has to be looked at and I just hope the CMA has the teeth on this one.”

Bozo made a statement the other day about people not worrying about his misdemeanours, but being worried about fuel and other costs. Does the inept muppet realise that almost 50% of the cost of fuel is made up of taxes? :fuming:

The cheapest petrol and diesel pumps in Coventry right now

Image

The latest fuel prices in Coventry have been revealed. It comes as a more detailed investigation into soaring fuel prices, now at record levels, is to be launched in the wake of a watchdog's alarming findings.

The Competition and Markets Authority’s initial review found there was a “growing gap” between the price of crude oil entering refineries and the wholesale price of petrol and diesel leaving them. It said the 5p-per-litre fuel duty cut implemented by the Treasury in March “appears to have been implemented” by retailers.

The review also found, however, that “the gap between wholesale prices and retail prices has not been a significant contributor to the overall rise in pump prices”. Yet a fuller inquiry will now take place.

Sarah Cardell, CMA general counsel, said: "While there is no escaping the global pressures pushing up fuel prices, the growing gap between the oil price and the wholesale price of petrol and diesel is a cause for concern. We now need to get to the bottom of whether there are legitimate reasons for this and, if not, what action can be taken to address it."

She said the retail market "does seem to be competitive" on the whole, but that there are some areas that "warrant further investigation". "These include finding out whether the disparities in price between urban and rural areas are justified," she said.

The CMA will use its formal legal powers to investigate in more depth and if evidence emerges of collusion or any such wrongdoing among retailers and refineries, the watchdog "won't hesitate to take action," Mrs Cardell warned. The average price of petrol and diesel is now at record levels across the country.

So, what's the situation in Coventry? According to petrolprices.com, the city's eight cheapest stations for petrol are:

1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 175.7p(members only / correct as of July 7)

2, Texaco, Sandpits Lane, Keresley - 185.9p (July 6)

7, Esso, Coventry Road, Exhall - 187.9p (July 6)

Retailer's huge petrol price drop could fuel cuts at supermarkets

Image

Petrol prices have been slashed at membership-only Costco who have reacted to falling wholesale prices by taking 8p off its unleaded petrol costs. The Express reports that prices at the retailer have been cut by 8p to 147.7p, however at the Coventry branch the cost is even cheaper.

Coventry's Costco is currently the cheapest place to buy petrol in the city, with a litre of unleaded costing 145.9p according to petrolprices.com. The next cheapest is the Morrisons in Binley, where a litre will cost 156.7p, some 11p more expensive.

It is also 16p cheaper than the average across the country, which the RAC say is 161.9p. Diesel is also cheaper at Costco, with the latest price listed at 166.9p per litre, giving you savings of almost 20p compared to the national average of 186.1p.

Simon Williams, fuel spokesperson for the RAC, said the move by Costco to cut prices demonstrates how overpriced fuel is elsewhere He added: "Drivers who aren’t fortunate enough to be members of Costco will no doubt be horrified to see just how cheaply fuel can be sold.

"It’s no wonder you often see long queues for fuel at Costco. In fact, they recently had to change the queuing system at their Bristol forecourt to cope with the number of people wanting to fill up.

"Even accepting Costco operates on pretty thin margins the supermarkets should be slashing their prices," he told Fleet News. The retailer has 19 forecourts across the UK, in cities such as Coventry, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Southampton.

Mr Williams continued, saying: "On Tuesday this week we called on them to cut by 5p a litre but since then wholesale costs have fallen even further, so they should really be cutting by at least 7p. Given the huge gap between wholesale fuel prices and the averages charged by the supermarkets, it could be argued that drivers are being deprived the benefit of the Government’s 5p duty cut.

"This is unfair and we hope it is being duly noted by both the Government and the Competition and Markets Authority which is currently investigating UK fuel retailing."
