"Shock figures show Coventry is the WORST city in the country for child cruelty"

Tue Jan 24, 2017 2:36 pm

Coventry is the worst place in England and Wales for child cruelty with rates nearly ten times higher than the national average.

According to an analysis of open crime data by the Coventry Telegraph there were 640 cases of child cruelty reported to police in the city in the 12 months to June 2016.

That’s more than twice as many as the 261 cases recorded in the area the year before.

Many more child cruelty cases in the city may have not been reported to police.

Coventry is no stranger to horrific stories of child cruelty, with the tragic story of Daniel Pelka shocking the nation.

Toddler Khaleel Hussain was killed by his mum's boyfriend in 2013 and Mariam Alam died in mysterious circumstances in 2011.

When compared to the population, that’s about 19 cases of child cruelty for every 10,000 people living in Coventry.

Across England and Wales there were only two cases of child cruelty recorded by police for every 10,000 people.

Cllr Ed Ruane, (Lab, Henley), Coventry City Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Cruelty towards a child is an abhorrent crime and one that sickens all right-minded people. The safeguarding and protection of children is an absolute priority for the council and for me personally.

“We work extremely close with our partners in the police, health services, charities and voluntary sector to both prevent children and young people falling into risk, and supporting them when they do.

“Protecting children from harm is everyone’s responsibility and I would urge anyone who knows or suspects a child is suffering from cruelty to report it immediately.”

Truth or not mud sticks even for years after especially when it is reported in a national news paper which is nt doing the city any favours and will attract the wrong kind to move here instead of what Coventry City Council is trying to attract which is big business.
Attract undersirables and thats what we will get.
When I and others look to move else where the first place you check to see what the city or town is like is they look at what the press and insurance says.

It certainly does.

In the late 70s I went on holiday with a couple of mates. We were negotiating for accommodation and had struck a reasonable deal. Then we were asked our address. COVENTRY! You'd have thought we'd admitted to being Hitler's b@st@rd sons. From being very amiable, the accommodation owner suddenly wasn't quite so sure about letting us stay. IIRC we had to put up a £50 bond which was a lot of money in those days.

On checkout the place was given a very rigorous inspection. In fact we left the place cleaner than when we arrived, and the owner did apologise. But his words stuck... "I'm sorry lads, but when you mentioned Coventry you can understand what I feared!"

It will most likely be worse now with a bigger deposit wanted Rebbonk when the press especially our own local press putting both stories out. I shall know if I ever get to go on holiday and if they ask for my address I shall get a relative in different areas of the uk to give there s and book it for me.

I can believe it was cleaner when you left to when you arrived from holiday places I have had years ago.

I am not sure if these press reports are to gain grants normally which are off the back of the poor which never see the benefits if so they are just doing this City a disservice.
