Menthol cigarettes to be BANNED in UK under new EU laws

Menthol cigarettes are about to become illegal under new regulations from the European Union.



Smokers across Coventry and Warwickshire will find it harder to buy a pack of menthols from tomorrow.

Under the new legislation, spearmint flavours in cigarettes will be gradually phased out over the next four years.

It is understood this will result in a complete ban by May 20, 2020.

Law makers believe menthol cigarettes are easier for youngsters to inhale - making them appealing to new smokers.

Action on Smoking and Health state in their guidelines: "Menthol cigarettes will be given an additional four year phase-out period before they are banned outright on 20th May 2020."

The rule, which serves as just one part of a major overhaul on smoking laws coming into effect on Friday, also includes roll-your-own tobacco.

Some research has discovered menthol varieties could actually be worse for your health than regular cigarettes.

It is feared they can cause more severe lung problems, despite their smoother taste.

Other initiatives set to come into effect will see all cigarette packets boasting at least 20 cigarettes.

This means 10-strong cigarette packets are set to be a thing of the past, with law makers saying larger packets will lead to larger anti-smoking warnings.

Rolling tobacco, meanwhile, will be sold in packets sized 30g minimum.

Misleading descriptions are also on the way out, so you won't be seeing "natural", "organic", or "lite" anywhere on a cigarette packet.

I am begining to wonder about these so called law makers in or out of the EU have they be phsycoanilised they try to prevent any one smoking stating its causes lung disease yet they carry on allowing cars buses and lorries trains and helicopters to polute the air we all breath with non leaded and deisel which are far worse killers causing cancers .

Yes Rebbonk and its also been in the news here months ago stating about Coventry quality air stating we are breathing in toxic fumes from traffic and it will take years to clean up also not to build schools hospitals and oap homes near any main roads.
