A community cafe is to throw a lifeline to people who can’t afford to put food on the table.

Volunteers and staff at Michael’s Children’s Centre in Bedworth are opening the cafe on Thursday, March 10.

The cafe will then open fortnightly on Thursdays from 11.45am to 1.15pm.

Staff and volunteers will serve meals for a donation if people can afford one or for nothing if they can’t.

Menus will be posted in advance on the centre’s Facebook page .

The cafe at the children’s centre in Hazel Grove is part of the national organisation Super Kitchens for groups setting up community cafes.

The food is coming from charity Fareshare East Midlands.

That’s a charity which collects spare food from large companies such as supermarkets and hands it to charities and community groups.

The food would otherwise be fed to animals or go to landfill sites.

Centre manager Jill Krusts said: “This new facility is a fabulous asset for our community which we hope is here for many years to come.

“We couldn’t have done it without the support of our funders and Newdigate Builders who took such care to build the café.

“We are also very grateful to our team of volunteers who give up their time to provide the Super Kitchen sessions, they are fantastic!”

The cafe is being helped with donations from The Nicholas Chamberlaine Trust, Warwickshire County Council’s Local Welfare Scheme and the County Councillors’ Grant Fund.

Coun Richard Chattaway (Lab, Bede) responsible for a £1,000 donation from the County Councillor Grant Fund said: “The Community Café and Super Kitchen at St. Michael’s Children’s Centre is providing a place where local people can go and share a meal with others, no matter what their financial circumstances may be.

“I am proud to support this scheme using dedicated funds from my Councillor Grant Fund to benefit the local community.

“The advantage of this project is that it encourages everyone in the community to come and eat together regularly.”
