Thousands of motorists have been caught speeding through the roadworks at Tollbar Island in Coventry.

Even though the area is best known for causing long delays, police figures show that average-speed cameras along the 40mph stretch of A45 between Tollbar and the Festival Island caught out nearly 3,500 drivers last year.

It makes Stonebridge Highway one of the worst roads in the West Midlands for speeding - with only the M6 between junctions four and five, and the A4040 in Handsworth, Birmingham, recording as many camera activations.

Nine other Coventry roads feature on a list of temporary camera locations used by police, with drivers being caught out 581 times in London Road heading away from the city, and 287 times in Coundon Wedge Drive between the Jaguar island and Pickford Way.

The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points.

The figures come as fixed speed cameras in the region look set to make a comeback after they were controversially switched off a year ago.

As the 304 cameras were switched off police announced they were increasing the number of mobile speed cameras from two to four.

Now seven new digital cameras have been proposed around Birmingham - although no new cameras are being proposed in Coventry.

Some motorists have posted on internet forums suggesting that the fixed speed camera on the Ryton side of the A45, close to Tollbar, is working again though.
