Turkey and nut roast will be among the options for inmates on December 25

Despite having their liberty taken away due to the horrible crimes they have committed, prisoners will still be able to enjoy a festive favourite - the Christmas roast .

Inmates up and down the country may be behind bars and separated from their loved ones on December 25, but those charged with managing their prisons will still give them the courtesy of a festive dinner.

In a break from the day-to-day menu, a roast will be made available with turkey topping the list of tasty options.

However, a spokesman for the Prison Service, which is run by the Ministry of Justice, said that the changes will be at “no extra cost to the taxpayer”.

The Prison Service manages jails all over the UK, including HMP Onley just outside Rugby .

Prisoners at places such as Onley will be given an option of a roast meal on Christmas Day, as well as other changes to the menu over the festive period.

The daily allowance for each inmate for food is £2.02.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Meals in prisons over Christmas are paid for from within the existing budget and at no extra cost to the taxpayer.”

Next door to Onley sits HMP Rye Hill, which is run by private firm G4S.

Prisoners there will also be offered a festive lunchtime menu with turkey expected to be a big hit.

However, for those looking for a vegetarian option, or those not fond of turkey, a nut roast will also be served up.

There will be a slight comedown later in the day though, as it will just be sandwiches for tea.

Over in Birmingham, it seems that the rioting last week at the Winson Green prison hasn’t put the spoilers on any Christmas celebrations, with turkey and all the trimmings being served on December 25.

Hundreds of inmates wreaked havoc at the prison last Friday having overpowered the gaurds and forcing the jail in to lockdown

The full menu at HMP Birmingham is:

  • Vegetarian crumble bake
  • Halal roast beef and Yorkshire pudding
  • Sliced roast turkey with pigs in blankets
  • Roast potatoes, Brussel sprouts, carrots, swede, sage and onion stuffing
  • Christmas pudding and custard
