Coventry is being warned to brace itself for temperatures as bitter as -6C tonight as the cold snap hits the city.

Temperatures are set to plummet over the coming few days, with Coventry set to be colder than both Iceland and Finland.

Forecasters are predicting the worst will come at the beginning of the week, with bookmakers slashing odds on a new record being set for the coldest night of the year before the coming weekend.

The good news is that Bablake weather station has forecast little, or no rain at all - though there will be frost overnight.

The Met Office is warning that parts of the West Midlands could see temperatures drop to as low as -6C.

Luke Mial, forecaster for the Met Office, “Monday won’t feel particularly warm with temperatures struggling to hit single figures and clear skies will mean quite a cold night and possibly the coldest of the autumn so far in England and Wales.

“Tuesday will continue to feel cold so it’s time to start wrapping up as we approach meteorological winter which starts on Thursday”.

Elsewhere, Iceland will record temperatures of 2C - a full eight degrees warmer.

Ladbrokes are offering evens odds that the temperature drops to -10C or lower by the weekend.

The high street bookies is also offering odds of 2/1 for a white Christmas in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

And there’s better odds as you head south, with 3/1 for Newcastle and Belfast, 4/1 for London, 5/1 for Liverpool and Manchester and 6/1 for Cardiff and Birmingham.

Jessica Bridge, of Ladbrokes, said: “Winter’s coming, and the odds are falling as quick as the temperature’s dropping, leaving punters already dreaming of a White Christmas.

Well, it was certainly a bit nippy this morning.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

"Polar vortex" could see temperatures plummet to -6C tonight

A “polar vortex” will see the temperatures plummet to around -6C tonight.

The plunging temperatures have prompted health bosses to issue a warning that cold weather can kill.

The Met Office issued the second cold weather health alert of the season and predicted “a cold start to winter is more likely than normal”.

Its level two cold weather alert warns of an 80 per cent chance of severe cold weather until Friday bringing increased health risks to vulnerable people.

Public Health England is calling on people to prepare for the chilly snap , warning that “cold does kill”.

Tonight will be very cold under largely clear skies with a widespread harsh frost for most and a minimum temperature of -6C.

Tomorrow will be a cold but sunny morning for many. As the cloud in the north filters south through the day, it should turn a little milder, the maximum temperature is 7C.

Dr Angie Bone, from the extreme events team at Public Health England , said: “Cold does kill, even in places where the temperatures aren’t at their lowest.

“Now is the time to prepare for the cold weather forecast by the Met Office, and to think of those you know who are older, very young, or have pre-existing health conditions who are particularly vulnerable.”

I walked the dog about 6 this evening. There was already a light frost coming down.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
