The prices sign outside our nearest Morrison's is only visible from the road, from the car park it's totally obscurred by trees. :clown:

Government to review diesel taxation after cross-party MPs campaign to save jobs

Image Image

THE GOVERNMENT is set to review diesel taxation after pressure from a cross-party campaign led by West Midlands MPs aiming to safeguard car industry jobs.

The review was announced as part of the Chancellor of the Exchequer Phillip Hammond’s Autumn Budget.

The campaign which includes Coventry and Solihull MPs says a recent collapse in diesel car sales – a drop of 40 per cent compared to last year – threatens significant job losses.

The plight of Jaguar Land Rover has ignited debate about diesel taxation and regulation, as well as Britain’s exit from the European Union (EU) and its effect on regional manufacturers.

Around 95 per cent of the cars produced by JLR run on diesel.

MP for Coventry South Jim Cunningham (Labour) and Warwick and Leamington Labour MP Matt Western were among cross-party MPs who wrote to the chancellor.

So was Dame Caroline Spelman, Conservative Meriden MP, who said: “This news has been welcomed by the automotive sector in our region.

“As vehicles become cleaner and CO2 emissions continue to reduce, it is important that the transition to even lower emission vehicles is supported by a sensible tax system.

“In committing to this review, the government has responded to industry concerns and helped to safeguard jobs.”

Morrisons cuts petrol price to under £1 a litre

Image

Morrisons has become the first major supermarket chain to cut the price of petrol to below £1 a litre at all its UK forecourts after the collapse of global oil markets.

The supermarket said motorists will pay a maximum of 99.7p a litre for petrol and no more than 104.7p-a-litre for diesel after global oil prices crashed last month to lows last seen in the late 1990s due to the coronavirus.

The fuel price reductions will take effect immediately across Morrisons 337 forecourts and marks the first time petrol has been sold nationally for less than £1 a litre since February 2016.

Morrisons tweeted that the move was a thank you to key workers who still needed to travel for essential work during the pandemic. The price cut comes as the government prepares to announce further details of a more general return to work.

Traditionally when one supermarket lowers its fuel prices, the others follow suit.

Asda said it plans to cut 3 pence per litre from the pump price of its unleaded petrol and 4 pence per litre on diesel to 99.7p a litre and 104.7p a litre respectively to help “support the nation during these unprecedented times” and lower the cost for those returning to work or completing essential journeys.

Tesco, the UK’s biggest petrol retailer, said it was cutting the cost of unleaded petrol to no more than 99.9p a litre and 105.9p on diesel at its 500 filling stations, from Tuesday.

Simon Williams, fuel spokesman for the RAC motoring group, said: “Credit is due to Morrisons for taking the lead and selling petrol and diesel at what is a very fair price and one that is much more reflective of what the retailer is itself paying to buy the fuel in. This will give people across the UK access to cheaper fuel just as they’re allowed to start driving more.”

Williams warned that there is “a darker side” to any large cuts to pump prices which might pile more pressure on smaller independent fuel retailers who are “already fighting for survival as a result of the coronavirus outbreak”.
