Police are hunting a man, believed to have been carrying a gun, after he attacked a pensioner at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.The 65-year-old victim was visiting the hospital when the man approached and demanded money, before producing what was thought to be a handgun.
When the victim refused to hand over cash, the man assaulted him and ran out on to Pembroke Place.
The victim received minor head injuries, Merseyside Police said.
The incident happened shortly before 1800 GMT on Christmas Eve, while the victim was in the toilets close to the main reception.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Cowdrey, of Merseyside Police, said: "Attacks such as this are completely unacceptable and I would urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward to help us bring the offender to justice.
"I would also like to reassure the public that occurrences like this are rare and this was an isolated incident."
The gunman is white, in his late 20s to early 30s, and is 6ft tall with short light brown hair. He was wearing blue jeans and a black leather bomber jacket.
