West Midlands Fire Service said they were rescued from the terraced house in Lower Stoke, along with another person, shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

A neighbour rescued one of the three from an upstairs room and all were taken to hospital but the 42-year-old man and boy died later.

The fire started as a result of a chip pan left unattended, a fire service spokesman said.

All three people were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, the fire service said.

Firefighters drive ambulance

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it a got a number of calls at about 2350 GMT to Hollis Road.

When paramedics arrived they saw firefighters bringing two people out of a smoke-filled house.

A crew took the boy to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire with a firefighter driving the ambulance as paramedics tried to resuscitate him.

"Other firefighters were carrying out CPR on the man," the spokesman said.

"Sadly, despite the best efforts of fire, ambulance and hospital staff it was not possible to save either the man or the boy and they were both confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital."
