Labour remains the biggest party on Coventry City Council after all-out local elections - but lost their majority
Prime Minister Keir Starmer came under increasing pressure today after a number of Labour backbenchers called on him to resign. The move comes after local elections that saw Reform UK make huge gains - including in Coventry.
Nigel Farage's party went from two MPs to 20 in Coventry City Council's first all-out elections in more than 20 years. Labour lost control of the city council although remain the biggest party and it remains to be seen who will take control as deals are struck.
CoventryLive asked all three Coventry MPs for their thoughts on whether Starmer should remain as Prime Minister.
One Coventry MP, Zarah Sultana, is openly critical of Starmer and while she hasn't commented on the fallout from last week's local elections, she previously called for him to resign last month over the appointment of Peter Mandelson.
Ms Sultana was a Labour MP until she was suspended over a rebellion on the two-child benefit cap - a policy Labour later u-turned on. She went on to set up Your Party with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Mary Creagh, who represents Coventry East and is also Minister for Nature, said Keir Starmer has 'my full support'.She said: "After the disasters of Liz Truss's budget and three Tory Prime Ministers in two years, the British people were clear that they did they wanted Security and stability from this labour government. That is what Keir Starmer has delivered as our prime minister and he has my full support.
"The world is going through huge challenges with the war in Ukraine and the Iranian blockade which has knocked our domestic economy. We need calm heads to get through these difficult times. We need to reflect on and learn the lessons of last week's disappointing results but in Coventry I will be out listening to voters as I have been every week since I was elected, showing how this government is delivering for renters, workers and families."
Coventry North West MP Taiwo Owatemi and Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana, did not respond to requests for comment.
