Takeaway at former Coventry post office 'too close to school'Plans to turn part of a former post office into a fast food outlet have hit a stumbling block.
As previously reported, a scheme submitted to Coventry City Council in March sought permission for a new takeaway at the old Maudslay Road Post Office.
Located near the junction with the Allesley Old Road, the site has not been used as a post office for some years, with one part of it becoming a hairdressing salon several years ago.
But plans to use a secondary part of the building to sell food look dead in the water after planning officers recommended it be refused.
A series of reasons were listed for the decision, including its location near a school, existing shops of a similar nature nearby and concerns about parking.
"The proposed hot food takeaway would prejudice the health of the community as it is located within 5 minutes walk of a school and in an area with an existing high concentration of hot food takeaways," the decision notice states. "The proposed parking provision is inadequate and prejudices highway safety, whilst failing to comply with the Car and cycle parking standards within Appendix 5 of the Coventry Local Plan."
Other concerns referenced related to odours and noise.
The notice continues: "The proposed external flue would result in harm to the visual amenity of the area due to its size and prominent position within the street scene.
"Insufficient information has been submitted to ensure that the proposal would not result in unacceptable harm to residential amenity arising from noise and odours associated with the extraction flue."
The application can be seen on Coventry City Council's planning portal using reference PL/2026/0000228/FUL.
