Main Coventry road resurfacing works spark 'terrible driving' as councillor says 'I'm horrified'

Coventry Council is reviewing plans for speed cameras on Broad Lane in Eastern Green, subject to funding and police approval, amid safety concerns



Works to improve a Coventry route sparked a safety concern. The city's road's chief said the result of resurfacing on Broad Lane in Eastern Green has left highways bosses scratching their heads.

Cllr Patricia Hetherton said while the stretch was now one of the best in the city for quality, the improvements had sparked a raft of 'just terrible driving'.

Cllr Hetherton, the city services portfolio holder on Coventry City Council, met with officers this week and pointed out that while the improvements were welcome: "With that comes the speed and that's quite clear."

She said: "We spent some time on Banner Lane and were horrified with what we saw at the junctions with Hockley Lane and Broad Lane. It was just terrible driving, we couldn't get our heads around it."

Those comments came following a report by the council's head of network management David Keaney into potential traffic calming measures around the area. It was in response to a six-name petition which called for action on Upper and Lower Eastern Green Road, Sutton Avenue, Farcroft Avenue and Broad Lane.

The petition warned that traffic will be increasing as more houses are built in the area and added there had been two car collisions on Broad Lane in the last couple of months. Mr Keaney said: "Broad Lane has been an area of particular concern.", reports Coventry Live.

"It is part of a wider review of potential future ASE (average speed enforcement) corridors we are currently looking at. That piece of work will be taking place over the next couple of months."

Addressing concerns in the wider area, particularly outside Park Hill Primary School, he said: "It is an area that has had some focus over more than six months and we have visited with residents to try and iron out some of the concerns that have been raised. It doesn't meet the criteria which would justify traffic calming measures however, the area around the school is one we are keen to look at particularly around the high level of pedestrian movement from the Unicorn public house up to the school.

"We have developed a set of proposals and will be looking to engage with the local community. The key focus of this is trying to aid pedestrian access across the road outside the school."

The proposals include road narrowing on Lower Eastern Green Lane to accommodate a pedestrian crossing and changes to existing single and double yellow lines and other road markings in the area. New mini-roundabouts will be created on Alderminster Road's junction with Sutherland Avenue and Alspath Lane's junction with Unicorn Avenue and it is also proposed to extend the 20mph zone to include Alspath Lane's junction with Unicorn Avenue and Upper Eastern Green Lane.
