Ongoing work in Whitley, Willenhall, Ernesford and Binley is leading to daily congestion
A series of largely unconnected roadworks happening simultaneously across the south east of Coventry are causing misery for commuters and residents. Ongoing work in Whitley, Willenhall, Ernesford and Binley is leading to daily congestion which in turn is causing friction and frustration.
Residents say the issue is reaching boiling point, with standoffs between motorists and police involvement.
"I’ve never known it this bad," said one resident who lives in Whitley and works in Binley. "Depending on the time of day the traffic to the Marina can be back to Asda island - it's chaos.
"I think the big issue is the amount of roadworks in the area at the same time - temporary lights in so many different places is having a knock-on effect.
"Firstly London Road by the Marina chippy, and they’ve now closed the entrance to Chance Avenue. Then there is Langbank Avenue by Ernesford Grange. There is work at the TGIs Island. We're also dealing with the diverted traffic coming in from the Clifford Bridge Road one-way system. Then there is also work on the Humber Road too. It's like a perfect storm."
Two of those mentioned, Clifford Bridge Road and Humber Road, are related to the cycleway system currently being completed across the city's major roads.
An interactive map on Coventry City Council's website shows where work is taking place and who is responsible for it - the works impacting Willenhall and surrounding areas currently are being carried out by a mixture of organisations, including the council itself, but also utility companies and National Highways.
Some of the locations will continue until well into next year, some will finish early January and others this month before Christmas.
"The final straw for my husband came last night," the resident added. "They’ve dug a hole at the end of our road and shut it off and he thinks it’s a conspiracy to stop us going out!
"I got pulled over by the police on Friday because I drove along hash lines to take a right onto Tonbridge Road to get out of the traffic.
"Then my daughter said there was a stand-off between vehicles coming both ways the other night - a roadworker had to stand in the road to try and step in and then cars had to mount the pavement to get past - everyone was beeping their horns.
"People are getting seriously cheesed off with it and it feels like something needs to be done and quick."
Another resident living and working in the area said: "Usually if there are temporary lights on your route to work, you just go an alternative way. But that's not an option as it seems no matter which way you go there is roadworks. It seems like no sooner are you through one lot, you get caught up in the next bit of congestion. It's infuriating."
