Staff at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire will be wearing the masks in some departments
Face masks are back at a Coventry hospital amid a surge in flu cases. Staff at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire will be wearing face masks in the emergency department and children’s emergency department, it’s been confirmed.
Anyone visiting these areas is also urged to wear face masks.
It comes as neighbouring hospitals have declared a ‘critical incident’ as A&E departments face huge demand.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which is responsible for Queen Elizabeth, Heathlands and Good Hope Hospitals, says demand for beds is soaring due to an increased number of flu cases.
The George Eliot hospital in Nuneaton has also urged visitors and patients to wear masks to help stem a tide of infection.
A spokesman for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire posted on their social media accounts: “Due to a rising number of flu cases, staff in our Emergency Department and Children’s Emergency Department will be wearing face masks.
“If you are waiting in those areas for care, masks will be available and we would encourage patients and visitors to also wear a mask.
“The best way to protect yourself and your family is by having the flu jab, if eligible, and by following good hand hygiene practices.”
