There is an urgent need for a safe crossing point near a city pub in order to "prevent a potential tragedy", a councillor has said.

A petition for a crossing on Kerseley [sic] Road near the Old Shepherd pub was presented to Coventry City Council on Tuesday.

Councillor Bea Christopher sponsored the 146-name petition, which called on the authority to install a traffic light pedestrian crossing system on Kerseley Road near the roundabout at the junction of Tamworth Road, Kerseley Green Road and The Scotchill.

"This area has become extremely unsafe," Christopher said.

"It has resulted in numerous near misses and there is a serious risk to children and other pedestrians.

"I am calling on the relevant cabinet member to prioritise this issue and take immediate steps to improve safety."

Christopher said school children frequently crossed the road at the bus stop and residents had reported that crossing could take up to five minutes at busy times.
