Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council's regeneration boss has quit on the eve of a major project in Nuneaton town centre. Maria Bailey was the director for place and economy at the Town Hall.

She had been at the local authority for the past three years but CoventryLive understands she left suddenly last week. As director for place and economy, she championed regeneration projects across the two towns.

She was a member of the Grayson Place Limited board, which oversees the Grayson Place development work that is currently underway in Abbey Street. Also, as part of her director role, she was also overseeing another major project in town- 'Bridge to Living'.

Demolition works are about to start on the row of empty shops on Bridge Street, opposite the old Debenhams store, and several on adjoining Church Street. Green hoarding surrounds these units and an excavator is on site.

But the sudden departure of the director has left question marks about a replacement, especially in light of the fact that the demolition works are due to start soon.

CoventryLive contacted the borough council and a spokesperson said: "The council can confirm that the Strategic Director for Place and Economy has resigned from their post.

"As with all vacant roles, the council is currently reviewing options for replacement but in the meantime, interim arrangements are in place.”
