New 'sparrow crossings' are set to be installed on two roads in Coventry. The city council has unveiled a new traffic order which explains it plans to install controlled crossings at two locations in the city.

Dubbed 'Sparrow crossings', they are also known as signalised parallel crossings and pedestrians and cyclists can cross the road at the same time but on separate paths. Their introduction forms part of the Charter Avenue Cycle Extension scheme

"The sparrow crossings will be used by both cyclists and pedestrians and provide a necessary and safe crossing point along the route," the council traffic order explains.

The two proposed locations are as follows:

Cannon Hill Road new controlled crossing

  • Approximately five metres south of its junction with Tutbury Avenue.

A45 Fletchamstead Highway

  • Altered controlled crossing - approximately 5 metres north west of its junction with Canley Ford
The order explains that the works to install the crossings are expected to be completed by the end of July. Before this, people have the chance to have their say and any representations should be forwarded in writing to Mr R Parkes, Place Team, Legal Services, PO Box 7097, Council House, Coventry CV6 9SL, or via email to rob.parkes@coventry.gov.uk

The deadline for all responses is July 10.
