A New HMO plan has been revealed for a Grade II listed building in Coventry. It asks for listed building consent for proposed internal and external alterations to accommodate 12 bedroom HMO (House of Multiple Occupation) at 23 Allesley Old Road.

The building is known as Allesley Lodge and was once a guest house as well as student accommodation. It already has HMO status.

But a new application asks for permission for it to be a HMO for 'independent adults with minor support needs' In order for the HMO plan to go-ahead, special permission has to be granted by the city council.

According to Historic England's website, the building was a former master watchmaker's house and workshop in around l846. Its features include red brick, a Welsh slated roof and four sash windows under stucco lintels.

The main entrance door has panelled reveal, Doric surround with cornice, no consoles, and an arched doorway on left with fanlight. In the planning application, it states that all external walls would be retained with no extensions and the front facade of the site will be left untouched.

"The application proposes HMO x 12 for independent adults with minor support needs and associated works," the design and access statement reads. "The internal space is remodelled to provide 12 no of bedrooms en-suite with the smallest size room measuring 6.8 sqm (room 5) HMO standard.

"The applicant has identified the need for housing, and it is his intension to provide this need awhile improving the status of the building which is in a deplorable state now."

The application is now being considered by officers at the city council. Details can be found on the council's website in the planning section by searching for reference PL/2025/0001134/LBC.

I think it's meant to house the disabled homeless who are currently in the nearby Ramada Hotel?
