Its aim is to make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists

Plans for a new 20mph zone on a Coventry street have been revealed. The city council has unveiled that it proposes to introduce a new 20mph 'Speed Limit Zone' on part of Beechwood Avenue.

The reduced speed limit will be in place from 62 metres westerly of the western most junction of Hartington Crescent and continues to 130 metres north westerly of the rail bridge. "The order is proposed for the purposes of public safety and to create a safer social space within the Highway, with more attractive environments for walking and cycling," the council plan explains.

The traffic order, which has to be approved, is currently out for consultation. It means that locals can have their say.

The order explains: "Earlsdon was chosen as one of two pilot areas in Coventry for Transport for West Midlands’ Active Travel Neighbourhood funding, for a scheme of this type, as the area has historically presented issues that would best be tackled with a neighbourhood-wide approach.

"The scheme was introduced throughout 2024 and subsequent to this requires a small amendment to the extent of the 20mph speed limit."

The deadline for people to make any objections to the plans is May 22. More details can be found on the city council's website here

I used to cross it on the way to school and could feel the electricity from the overhead power cables!
