Cameras will be installed across Coventry in March

New speed cameras are being installed on six major roads in Coventry. Cameras are being rolled out across the city, including in Coundon, Aldermans Green, and Holbrooks.

Councillors say the move was based on evidence that average speed cameras have been 'effective' elsewhere in Coventry. It is hoped they will improve road safety and make major city routes 'safer.'

Cameras will be installed on Moseley Avenue, Four Pounds Avenue, Wheelwright Lane, Holbrook Lane, Aldermans Green Road, and Parrotts Grove. Plans for the new traffic enforcement measures were approved in March 2024.

Coventry City Council said they worked with West Midlands Police to determine which city roads the traffic cameras were needed. Speeding was found to be an 'issue' on the 30mph routes where they are being installed.

Cameras are due to go live in March. Signs will go up 'well ahead' of the switch-on date to ensure people are aware of each new zone, Coventry City Council announced today (February 11).

Work to install the bright yellow camera equipment will take place in the coming weeks, Cllr Patricia Hetherton said. Signage will be placed on the 30mph city roads saying: 'Average Speed Enforcement Starting Soon.'

Cameras will calculate the speed of a vehicle by measuring the time taken to travel between set points and are seen as an effective way of reducing speeding. Data will be collected and analysed to show how driving at speed can increase serious collisions and injuries.

Figures showed that average speed camera locations across Coventry have had a 'significant impact.' In recent years, they have contributed to more than a 40 per cent reduction in personal injury collisions, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) said.

Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “Cameras are not being put in place to raise money, the purpose is to keep people safe and to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads. We have shown with the other ASE schemes we have introduced across the city that these cameras work to reduce the severity and number of personal injuries.

“Road safety is a priority for Coventry City Council and drivers should be getting used to these schemes by now and realise how irresponsible speeding is unacceptable. Avoidable collisions caused by speed and driving dangerously affect many people, so anything done to reduce this is great news for all residents. Just by slowing down and being aware of all others around them will make the city safer for us all.”
