Firefighters have determined the cause of a Coventry flat fire in which two people tragically died. It happened in Stoke Aldermoor yesterday (Friday, November 8).

Crews from West Midlands Fire Service were called following reports of a large blaze at a first-floor maisonette on The Coppice. Police also rushed to the scene in the early hours of yesterday morning (November 8).

Two people, who have not been identified, were found dead inside the property, West Midlands Fire Service said. Yesterday, Fire Investigation Officers (FIOs) were seen carrying out enquiries into the cause of the serious blaze, which erupted at around 4.50am.

Officials have today (November 9) confirmed that the blaze had started 'accidentally.' It was sparked by a pedal bike that had been converted into an e-bike and was stored in the hallway, West Midlands Fire Service said.

In a statement issued today (November 9), West Midlands Fire Service said: “Our Fire Investigators have concluded their investigation at the scene and found that the cause of the fire was accidental. It involved a pedal bike that had been converted into an electric bike, which was stored in the hallway of the property.

“No further information relating to the cause or the victims who sadly lost their lives in this tragic accident will be released at this time. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic accident.”
