An 'eyesore' Coventry block of flats that has been plagued by anti-social behaviour for more than a decade has been demolished. Jasmine Court has been bulldozed by Coventry City Council.

Councillors say they have spent years trying to demolish the empty block of low-rise flats at 1 to 15 Jasmine Court in Stoke Aldermoor. Fencing has been placed around the rubble, which will be removed in the coming weeks as the site is cleared for redevelopment, Cllr Naeem Akhtar said.

It follows a long period of legal efforts by Coventry City Council. Officials say they are increasing efforts to tackle issues around empty properties in the city with good-quality housing said to be in 'high demand.'

Cllr Akhtar, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “I am delighted that our efforts are paying off to bring empty homes back into use.

“Jasmine Court has been a real eyesore, and I know that local people will feel a real sense of relief that something positive is going to happen. We are hopeful that eventually suitable social housing, providing family homes, will replace the demolished flats.”

Cllr Abdul Khan, Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council, added: “I know that a number of Coventry City Council services have been working hard to remove this property.

“Often, a number of legal steps need to be addressed to deal with housing that has been left empty and in poor disrepair, and I am pleased to see a positive outcome for people living around Jasmine Court.”
