A man has been jailed for an 'unprovoked' attack on a taxi driver in Coventry. Artur Nowostawski carried out the violent assault earlier this year, leaving his victim with serious injuries.

Nowostawski was picked up by a taxi from Coventry Railway Station before driving towards Bennetts Road South on April 29. Shortly before the end of the journey, he attacked the driver with a knife, hitting him in the neck and chest and demanding money, West Midlands Police said.

Although the victim managed to escape, he was left with serious arm and chest injuries. Detectives shared an image of Nowostawski as part of a wanted appeal, which led to the 40-year-old being arrested a day later, West Midlands Police said.

Nowostawski, from Coventry, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon at Warwick Crown Court. He was jailed for six years and nine months on Tuesday, August 6.

DC Jack Phillips, from Coventry Police, said: “It was an unprovoked and sustained assault which left the victim with serious injuries. He was lucky not to be more seriously hurt and is now thankfully on the road to recovery.

“It took quick work from the officers to identify Nowostawski and arrest him in order to bring this case to court, and I am glad he has been put behind bars for a significant period of time.”
