The new leader of Rugby Borough Council has said he is "honoured, humbled and excited" to take on the role.

The Conservatives had held power through a minority administration until elections on 2 May saw them lose three seats.

Despite the Tories remaining the largest party, Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors elected Labour's Michael Moran as new leader of the local authority on 5 June

It means the party will govern with support from the Liberal Democrats via a so-called confidence and supply arrangement.

The council will also feature an all-Labour cabinet.

The Conservatives had previously either led or controlled the council for the past two decades.

In a speech, Mr Moran referenced the regeneration of the town centre and the potential of Rugby as "a town with a cultural heart" adding that he wanted to instil "a sense of pride".

He also spoke of the need for a new financial strategy, adding that it would be something they would "begin to address on day one of a Labour led-administration".
