Council 'sorry about illiterate binmen'

Homes have been left without bins because the drivers who were delivering them couldn't read maps, reports say.

According to The Daily Telegraph, a thousand homes in Oxfordshire were left without the bins for a month and a half.

Waste contractors Verdant, who were employed by the council, explained in an official report that the delay was due to the "educational background" of the drivers.

"An issue in relation to bin deliveries was attributable to the educational background or literacy of some of the crew members," the document read. "It appeared that they did not read maps or addresses and that they relied entirely on visual memory.

"A consequence was that bins were not delivered to approximately 1,000 properties at the start of the contract."

One resident described the news as "ridiculous", adding: "I just cannot understand how people cannot read a map. On our road, there are only two or three of us that never got them, so it was a case of missing out houses."

A spokesperson for Verdant claimed that the drivers were short-term contractors who were unfamiliar with the area.
